PB hotel design editorial

Among Houston's River Oaks neighborhood, where old Texas money has long favored understatement over spectacle, a limestone-clad tower set back behind a circular motor court planted with mature live oaks has maintained the city's most quietly authoritative address since its opening in 2003. The St. Regis Houston, rising nineteen floors above the leafy intersection of Westheimer and Del Monte, was conceived as a counterpoint to the glass-and-steel energy of downtown — a property that would feel more country house than corporate tower, its terraced porte-cochère draped in clipped hedging and its massing stepping back from the street in horizontal planes that soften the building's considerable height. Inside, the interiors carry a warm American traditionalism grounded in rich materials rather than period mimicry. Guest rooms are furnished with tall leather headboards in caramel and amber tones, dark mahogany case pieces, and tone-on-tone carpet that anchors each space in a palette of honey, chocolate, and cream. The lounge areas push further toward a clubby register — coffered ceilings, black lacquered tables with brass detailing, nailhead-trimmed leather seating, and tall steel-framed windows that draw the garden greenery into otherwise deeply upholstered interiors. The all-day dining room, its floor patterned in alternating limestone and dark slate, wraps the garden on three sides through black-mullioned windows, wicker dining chairs threading a note of informality through the otherwise considered formality of the 232-room hotel.

"Very disappointing stay. Very low level of service. From the moment we arrived it was clear it well below St Regis standard and felt like the low end of the Marriott chain hotel ( not towards the top end like it should be) No one greeted us or offered to handle our luggage upon arrival. Check in was friendly enough but not notable. Room had outdated radio which was unusable and had an old fashioned shower-bath combo We went to the bar in the evening and service was very very slow ( bar and restaurant were almost empty). Table was dirty. We left the hotel the next morning at 900am for the day and returned at 330 with the room still not cleaned. We had even spoke with the floor housekeeper as we left in the morning so she knew we’d be gone and back mid afternoon. We called the front desk to let them know - and said they could send someone right now - however we had to prepare ourselves for an evening event. Then we were told housekeeping stops at 4 and they wouldn’t do it later. I then spoke with the manager who didn’t seem overly concerned and suggested I should have requested housekeeping when we left. I’m writing this from the hotel room and am considering checking out early and moving to the Four Seasons where the rooms can be had for similar rates. The only reason to stay at a st Regis is for their outstanding service. One of my favorite hotels ever is St Regis Rome and I stay there every chance I get. The level of service here felt like a no-frills hotel. I will not be returning."

"This was the worst week I’ve ever spent in a hotel, and I truly regret not leaving earlier. First, they didn’t provide my baby with a simple kids’ shampoo or body wash even though this is supposed to be a family hotel. When I asked, they just said “no.” Second, I couldn’t sleep properly the entire time. The lights kept turning on and off by themselves clearly, this place is old and poorly maintained. You simply can’t rest in these rooms. And third, the staff was completely unsupportive. They closed the pool for two full days during the hottest week, without any notice or apology. We finally moved to the Four Seasons, and that was the best decision we made. I would never recommend The St. Regis Houston to anyone."

"What stands out at the St. Regis is the people. I want to mention some key food and beverage employees that made a positive impression for going to the extra mile: Ignacio at the early morning breakfast hour, Rosetta who promptly deliverers ice to your room with smile and sweet demeanor and Felipe. All were kind, professional and very personal. My family were impressed as well. Thank you, Jeremiah Cribley, and your staff for making a great impression. Don’t ever stop the coffee service in the lobby in the mornings. It is the best thing you can do for tired travelers!!! All the food was amazing."

"I'm so indebted to this hotel!! We had a wonderful stay and enjoyed the location very much. I left my jewelry box in the safety deposit by accident. When I realized and called, The gentleman who answered was so helpful, told me they had been waiting for my call and sent it back to me as soon I described the details to him. Not a thing missing!!"

"Came with my wife and daughter for a couple nights. Service was excellent, as several of the other reviews mentioned. Requested a few basic things during the stay - blanket, water, microwave - and everything was brought up promptly, by friendly staff. My daughter loved swimming at the pools both days. Room was spacious, and had a few nice touches - variety of dimmable light fixtures, large desk, comfortable chairs. Really enjoyed our stay."
