PB hotel design editorial

The Brewhouse of the Pearl Brewery complex, built in 1894 along the San Antonio River, was already one of the most architecturally distinctive industrial structures in Texas before Hotel Emma claimed it in 2015. Named for Emma Koehler, the widow who ran the brewery through Prohibition, the 146-room hotel was converted by architects Poteet Architects and decorated by Roman and Williams — the New York studio behind the Ace Hotel New York — who treated the original structure not as a shell to be softened but as the point of the whole enterprise. The concrete columns visible in the lobby photograph, patinated and massive, were left entirely as found; the wheel-form chandelier suspended between them, fitted with bare Edison bulbs, draws a direct line back to the building's mechanical past. Roman and Williams layered this industrial skeleton with a furniture sensibility drawn from Spanish Colonial Texas — ebonized four-poster beds with nailhead detailing, suzani-patterned accent cushions, woven leather stools, turned-wood side tables, and grasscloth wall panels that bring warmth without obscuring the raw limestone and brick visible in the brewery-wing rooms. The courtyard pool terrace, paved in terracotta tile and furnished with teak loungers under a steel-and-glass canopy, carries the same material logic outward. The whole compound sits at the northern edge of the River Walk, where Pearl's larger redevelopment — a farmers market, brewery tap, and culinary school — gives Emma a neighborhood rather than just an address.

"I loved everything about our stay at Hotel Emma. We are newly able to enjoy the finer things in life and let me tell you this did NOT disappoint. Javi at the reception was so friendly and welcoming. He gave us a great run down of things. The car service was quick, friendly and accommodating. They went the extra mile to give us waters for our drive, when THEY were the ones running back and forth in the Texas heat. So we get to our room and it is so cool, the exposed brick, *millennial chef's kiss*, the view, and the bathroom tile. Okay so the bed, so comfy. The shower was probably one of the best that I have ever had in my whole life. The water pressure was perfect, the lavender soaps made for an existential experience. You bet I went down and bought them from the store. Turn down service (is this what we have been missing out on our whole lives?!?) was so unexpected, but what a treat! Macaroons AND water? Probably the best night's sleep I have gotten since I was in my mother's womb. In the mornings we enjoyed our time relaxing and sipping coffee in the library. The coffee, amazing. The muffins, oh gosh the muffins, were so good. The pool was great. Need to change into flip flops? Oh don't worry you guys have them. Forgot to apply sunscreen? Oh don't worry that is on hand as well. It is safe to say that our stay exceeded our expectations. From the little details to the big picture, this hotel offered everything we could ever even anticipate wanting and we will have a hard time staying anywhere else in the future."

"This is our third time staying at Hotel Emma . What keeps us coming back is hands-down the service. Every person that we interacted with over the Four day trip was not only super accommodating and friendly but went above and beyond to make our stay fantastic. One of our favorite staff members was MIA M. She went out of her way to make us feel extra special and was helpful in guiding us to a memorable evening. Thank you, Hotel Emma we will be back!"

"Mercedes went above and beyond for our service! We went for breakfast and she was so kind to us. She saw me trying to take a picture and she even took us outside to take cute pictures of me and my boyfriend while we were waiting for food. We love Mercedes and we love Supper!!!"
