PB hotel design editorial

Parota wood, hand-stitched leather, and the slow curve of the San Antonio River — these are the materials and geometries that Houston firm Powers Brown Architecture and Mexico City interior designer Mariana Valero of Amass & G used to anchor Thompson San Antonio – Riverwalk within both its landscape and its cultural geography. Completed in 2021, the 20-story purpose-built tower rises along the North River Walk Arts District with a confidence that feels earned rather than imposed: its massing reads as a vertical gesture toward the sky while its ground-level relationship to the water remains deliberately human in scale. Inside, Valero's interiors draw a clear line to Mexican craft traditions without tipping into pastiche. Natural parota wood — warm, grain-heavy, almost amber in certain light — appears throughout alongside custom handstitched leather details that reward close inspection. The 162 guest rooms and 33 suites are finished with wide-plank hardwood floors and marble-tiled bathrooms, a palette that keeps the atmosphere close to residential without sacrificing the legibility of a well-considered hotel. The overall effect is closer to a curated private residence than to the branded neutrality that plagues so many contemporary high-rises. San Antonio's broader identity — the layered Spanish colonial, Tejano, and Anglo histories that make this city genuinely unlike anywhere else in Texas — filters through the design choices in a way that feels specific rather than decorative.

"We stayed here recently while in San Antonio to attend a wedding (wedding party recommended it). While the overall experience was good, it was definitely a combination of positives and concerns. To begin, while the hotel is technically located on the Riverwalk, this section of the Riverwalk is almost completely undeveloped. It's a good 15 minute walk (at street level) to reach restaurants in the heart of the Riverwalk. In full disclosure, when we returned at night, we felt safer walking at street level. Positives Friendly staff Nicely furnished rooms (although I would have preferred a chair instead of the small sofa Quiet hallways and rooms Valet - loaned us an umbrella when we realized ours was still in the car Helios Cafe' - delicious food and nice view Skyline view from 20th floor patio (especially at night) Concerns Could not adjust the thermostat and room felt stuffy in evening until after midnight Stocked mini fridge (no vending machines) was not set cool enough and could not be adjusted. Shower door was not aligned properly and not completely sealed (room 705), leading to leaks and water all over the floor Valet did not offer use of luggage carts, although I later observed a room with at least half a dozen immediately adjacent to valet line. Again, overall a nice stay, although at this price point I would not expect any of the concerns described above."

"The hotel is beautiful, with friendly staff and a smooth check-in. Room access requires a key card, which feels secure. The guest room was comfortable but not spacious; a side table would be useful. We needed maintenance to adjust the warm temperature, as controls are limited. The bathroom is large with a walk-in shower, and the room had a distinct “Fifty Shades of Gray” vibe due to the love kits. Children are now allowed at the hotel. Per the front desk, this was not always the case. Valet and house car services were convenient—Connie was excellent. While located on the Riverwalk, the hotel is at the far end with no river views except from the 20th floor. Returning via the Riverwalk or street at night feels dark and remote. As a World of Hyatt member, I’d prefer staying at the Hyatt Regency for its central location."

"Great location! This high end hotel is directly on the River Walk making access to all the restaurants and shops along the River Walk a breeze. The fragrant smell upon entering reminded me of the American Express Centurion Lounge. This was a nice added touch. Check-in experience was smooth and friendly. The elevator requires a room key card to access the guest floors which was reassuring as they have a lounge on the top floor with many outside guests visiting. The Moon's Daughters restaurant was top notch. My daughter had the burger and it was honestly one of the best burgers we have ever had. While there was quite a wait to get our food, the waitress was extremely pleasant and even offered a free dessert to make it up to us. Breakfast was at the same restaurant as the other one was closed for renovations. Breakfast was also high quality and the views from the 20th floor are outstanding. The guest room was totally adequate in size but certainly far from luxurious in size. The bathroom was large with a glass enclosed walk-in shower. The only negative was the bath towels were very thin and frayed with holes. For a true 5-star guest experience, the bath towels ought to be thick and spa-like. These were more in line with a cheap motel experience which certainly detracted from the rest of the vibe of this hotel. We did not take advantage of the valet as there was ample parking on the street directly in front of the hotel. The street parking is around $5 for a full day vs $75 per day at the valet. Overall, I would highly recommend this hotel. If you are planning a trip to San Antonio and want to be on or near the River Walk, this is a great choice."
