PB hotel design editorial

Parota wood, hand-stitched leather, and the slow curve of the San Antonio River — these are the materials and geometries that Houston firm Powers Brown Architecture and Mexico City interior designer Mariana Valero of Amass & G used to anchor Thompson San Antonio – Riverwalk within both its landscape and its cultural geography. Completed in 2021, the 20-story purpose-built tower rises along the North River Walk Arts District with a confidence that feels earned rather than imposed: its massing reads as a vertical gesture toward the sky while its ground-level relationship to the water remains deliberately human in scale. Inside, Valero's interiors draw a clear line to Mexican craft traditions without tipping into pastiche. Natural parota wood — warm, grain-heavy, almost amber in certain light — appears throughout alongside custom handstitched leather details that reward close inspection. The 162 guest rooms and 33 suites are finished with wide-plank hardwood floors and marble-tiled bathrooms, a palette that keeps the atmosphere close to residential without sacrificing the legibility of a well-considered hotel. The overall effect is closer to a curated private residence than to the branded neutrality that plagues so many contemporary high-rises. San Antonio's broader identity — the layered Spanish colonial, Tejano, and Anglo histories that make this city genuinely unlike anywhere else in Texas — filters through the design choices in a way that feels specific rather than decorative.

"My family and I stayed there for spring break. The hotel was nice and clean. Our room was very quiet. We were very impressed with the exceptional service. There is a pool on the rooftop, but it was closed due to the weather. The hotel is only a 10-minute walk on the riverwalk to the restaurants and shops. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting the area."

"We had a wonderful stay overall and truly felt taken care of while celebrating my birthday. The hotel is beautifully run, and the location near the river was absolutely perfect. The atmosphere and overall vibe of the property were calm, cool, and very relaxing, which made it a great place to unwind. Our room was also very well organized and had a stylish, comfortable feel. Most importantly, the cleanliness was outstanding—we really appreciated how immaculate the room was in every way. The staff we interacted with were very kind and helpful. Kevin at check-in was especially friendly and welcoming, which set a great tone for our stay. On our way out, Armando assisted us as our bellman and was incredibly kind and helpful from the moment he picked up our bags to loading everything into our vehicle. His professionalism and warmth were much appreciated. There were just a few areas of confusion or minor frustrations during the stay. Our package details were somewhat unclear. When speaking with Kevin and Angie at check-in, we were told we qualified for an upgrade that was available but ultimately not something we could receive, which was a bit confusing. Additionally, we were informed that we had $100 available to spend, but it was never clearly explained how that credit worked or if there were any restrictions attached to it. The lack of clarity around those details made that part of the experience feel slightly strange. We also heard a small dog barking on our 7th floor for a period of time, which was a little frustrating. We ended up turning on the TV and music to drown out the noise. Additionally, the room felt quite warm even though the temperature was set to 65 degrees. We asked Angie if an engineer could override the system for us, and while someone did come to assist, it took close to an hour and it was nearly 1:00 a.m. by the time the issue was addressed, to which he acknowledged the room felt warm. Despite those few inconveniences, we truly enjoyed our stay. The hotel itself is beautiful, the rooms were exceptionally clean, and the staff we encountered were friendly and attentive. Overall, it was a great experience and a lovely place to celebrate a special occasion."

"Phenomenal rooms and staff, will definitely be going again. The location was great and they have a towncar that can take you within a 3 mile radius which was such a timesaver!"

"The mattress was hard making my overnight stay terrible. Although I was forced to pay $63 to valet park, the valet guy was extremely nice and very helpful."
