PB hotel design editorial

Parota wood, hand-stitched leather, and the slow curve of the San Antonio River — these are the materials and geometries that Houston firm Powers Brown Architecture and Mexico City interior designer Mariana Valero of Amass & G used to anchor Thompson San Antonio – Riverwalk within both its landscape and its cultural geography. Completed in 2021, the 20-story purpose-built tower rises along the North River Walk Arts District with a confidence that feels earned rather than imposed: its massing reads as a vertical gesture toward the sky while its ground-level relationship to the water remains deliberately human in scale. Inside, Valero's interiors draw a clear line to Mexican craft traditions without tipping into pastiche. Natural parota wood — warm, grain-heavy, almost amber in certain light — appears throughout alongside custom handstitched leather details that reward close inspection. The 162 guest rooms and 33 suites are finished with wide-plank hardwood floors and marble-tiled bathrooms, a palette that keeps the atmosphere close to residential without sacrificing the legibility of a well-considered hotel. The overall effect is closer to a curated private residence than to the branded neutrality that plagues so many contemporary high-rises. San Antonio's broader identity — the layered Spanish colonial, Tejano, and Anglo histories that make this city genuinely unlike anywhere else in Texas — filters through the design choices in a way that feels specific rather than decorative.

"The hotel was beautiful and the service was amazing!"

"Wanted to share a great experience with your valet attendant Mr. Willie P. We had asked Mr. Willie for directions to a popular barbecue restaurant "Pinkertons" that was near by. He shared directions and added to how great the restaurant was, but also mentioned that us walking wouldn't make it in time to enjoy since it was about 30 mins until closing. He went out of his way to offer me and my family with a courtesy ride. What would have been a 12min walk turned into a 4 mintue drive. Mr. Willie was prompt, polite and professional. Definitely a GREAT ASSET to the hotel."

"This hotel has hidden charges, an early check-in fee, additional taxes after you have already paid taxes, and charges for coffee in the room as minibar items when coffee should be complimentary. After calling the next day inquiring about the several charges on my bill, the lady answering the phone was frustrated because I asked about the charges, put me on a 15-minute wait and another person came to the phone, having me explain all over again, only to be told we used $55 plus in minibar items, and all we used was two cups of coffee. Please read the fine print and be ready to pay more than $550 per night. Good and clean, but not worth the money. We went to the Monarch instead, and it was a great experience there."

"Awesome on all three fronts: location, professional staff & quality of F&B and amenities. Highly competent and knowledgeable staff, in sync with the Hyatt luxury vibe. Although the outdoor furniture calls for some improvement, the great cuisine served by a professional team makes this place stand out! Their complementary ride service within the 5-mile is a huge icing on the cake! I would highly recommend this location for business or vacation travelers alike!"
