PB hotel design editorial

Fifty white canvas tents scattered across 200 acres of burnt-ochre Utah desert, each one pitched toward Looking Glass Arch as if the landscape itself called the alignment — this is the premise of ULUM Moab, which opened in 2023 and earns its Two MICHELIN Keys not through conventional architecture but through the deliberate refusal of it. DTJ Design kept the permanent structures low and recessive: the lobby building presents as a horizontal bar of warm timber cladding and floor-to-ceiling bi-fold glass, its cedar-lined ceiling and concrete floors deferring entirely to the Canyonlands panorama beyond. Tensile shade canopies above the outdoor terraces echo the tent typology without mimicking it, and a sandstone fire pit anchors the social heart of the camp with the directness of something genuinely ancient. Inside the tented suites, DESIGN360unlimited and Under Canvas VP of Design Ben Landry worked a careful layering of the elemental and the comfortable. Raw timber ridge poles carry white canvas overhead while walnut-stained hardwood floors and iron-framed furniture — lean leather sling chairs, clean-lined coffee tables — keep the interiors from tipping into rustic pastiche. Pendleton blankets fold across crisp white bedding; barn-door panels in reclaimed wood slide to reveal en-suite facilities. At 360 square feet of interior plus a 70-square-foot private deck, each suite frames the sage and red-rock expanse like a living painting, confirming that the most considered design decision here was simply choosing where to look.

ULUM Moab Reviews

"We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Ulum. It was a great base for exploring the National and State Parks in the area. The remote setting was ideal for night sky viewing as we had unobstructed views of the night sky without distracting ambient lights. After reading several reviews of Ulum by other visitors, I worried that there would be a lot of noise from children playing in the pool or running around the camp however that was not a problem at all for us. Everyone was respectfully low key. We enjoyed several nicely prepared dinners at the restaurant and staff were friendly and helpful. Our tent was spacious but it did get chilly overnight so mornings were a bit uncomfortable until we got a good fire going. Overall, we had a wonderful stay at Ulum."

"Ulum Moab was an incredible experience. The location is just 20 minutes from Moab but felt farther away because it is relaxing, quiet and serene. The staff is friendly and helpful, the tents are comfortable and well-appointed and the food was delicious. We enjoyed the nightly s’mores and fire pits because they facilitated conversation with other visitors. I highly recommend Ulum if you want to enjoy Moab and its attractions and stay at a unique resort."

"Lovely location about 50 mins south of Moab and overlooking Looking Glass arch. We enjoyed pre dinner drinks overlooking the countryside as the fun went down. The clamping reminded me of safari in Africa - decent tents well equipped with AC and wood burner. Needed the wood burner it was freezing overnight and first thing. Enjoyed the food and ok wine and drinks list Service could be excellent one minute and a bit hit and miss the next but overall I would say it was good. Worth staying here for the location alone and it was a bit different to the usual accommodations"

"The property is in a stunning location with shelter from a huge colourful rock formation and the view of rock climbers heaven. The glamping accommodation is spacious, cosy and functional. Has both a fire and A/C. The restaurant, plunge pool and relaxing area has fires, music and a great menu. Staff are friendly, authentic and helpful. Well managed and very inviting."
