PB hotel design editorial

Fifty white canvas tents scattered across 200 acres of burnt-ochre Utah desert, each one pitched toward Looking Glass Arch as if the landscape itself called the alignment — this is the premise of ULUM Moab, which opened in 2023 and earns its Two MICHELIN Keys not through conventional architecture but through the deliberate refusal of it. DTJ Design kept the permanent structures low and recessive: the lobby building presents as a horizontal bar of warm timber cladding and floor-to-ceiling bi-fold glass, its cedar-lined ceiling and concrete floors deferring entirely to the Canyonlands panorama beyond. Tensile shade canopies above the outdoor terraces echo the tent typology without mimicking it, and a sandstone fire pit anchors the social heart of the camp with the directness of something genuinely ancient. Inside the tented suites, DESIGN360unlimited and Under Canvas VP of Design Ben Landry worked a careful layering of the elemental and the comfortable. Raw timber ridge poles carry white canvas overhead while walnut-stained hardwood floors and iron-framed furniture — lean leather sling chairs, clean-lined coffee tables — keep the interiors from tipping into rustic pastiche. Pendleton blankets fold across crisp white bedding; barn-door panels in reclaimed wood slide to reveal en-suite facilities. At 360 square feet of interior plus a 70-square-foot private deck, each suite frames the sage and red-rock expanse like a living painting, confirming that the most considered design decision here was simply choosing where to look.

"Amazing experience staying at this property while visiting the national park near Moab. This hotel is a 30 minute drive from the town of Moab. The tents were beautiful Especially the heating pad in the beds. The text as equipped with heating and cooling. The restaurant was excellent, great food and service. We arrived very late at night but the staff as available to greet us and take us to our tents. This was a great location for visiting the Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. Highly recommend this hotel! Provides a very unique experience with a high level of service!"

"Absolutely amazing! I was a little nervous as to what we were walking into, but this was one of the best experiences. The tent was extremely clean and exceptionally comfortable. The bed was comfortable and all the linens were cleaned. We loved exploring the national parks during the day and coming back in the evening to the dipping pools and dinner. We were treated to a beautiful sunset and a sky full of stars each night while sitting on the large patio. Even though there were other guests, we never heard anyone at night and everyone was extremely friendly and respectful. The staff were helpful with our requests when we needed something."

"Wow! What an experience!!! We had never been to an Under Canvas property and did not know what to expect. The location was stunning, right outside Arches National Park and within walking distance to its own climbable arch! The highlight for our young daughter was the many daily craft activities and the pools. Food was also great and fresh. The tents were much larger than we expected and it made for a very unique stay in the desert. Would stay again!"

"We stayed here for 2 nights in early May, the whole experience was absolutely perfect. The resort is completely at one with it’s beautiful surroundings and the tents are really nicely spaced to feel as if you’re alone with the views The staff throughout were exceptional with the perfect (and very hard to find) balance of warmth, professionalism and enthusiasm for this beautiful area and the resort itself. The tents are perfectly appointed with absolutely everything and more that you could need for the stay, the log burner was great and the logs were refilled every day by the friendly and knowledgeable staff, it was very cold early morning but once we got the fire going it was warm in no time and the warming electric underblanket was a joy. Lovely and much larger than expected bathroom and shower, really high quality bedding on the comfortable bed and great cofffee &tea for the kettle. We had a great welcome on arrival and throughout the stay all staff were relaxed, knowledgeable and warm while having very high standards of service and care. There was a country style singer outside by the fire pits on the Thursday night who was excellent, great voice and music and perfect for the surroundings. Michaela who drove us to our room and did such a comprehensive explanation of everything we needed made us feel at home immediately and started our experience in the best possible way."
