PB hotel design editorial

At 9,000 feet on Empire Pass, where Deer Valley's upper mountain gives way to a ridgeline of Engelmann spruce and trembling aspen, a cluster of steeply pitched rooflines glows amber against the Utah dusk — the kind of image that makes the case for mountain architecture doing exactly what it promises. Montage Deer Valley, which opened in 2010 with 154 rooms and suites across six floors, was conceived by WATG as a grand-scale interpretation of the American mountain lodge, its steep gabled dormers and warm-toned stone cladding drawing from the Craftsman and National Park rustic traditions without tipping into pastiche. The massing steps carefully down the slope, ski runs descending directly to the base of the building in a ski-in, ski-out configuration that remains among the most direct of any Utah resort. The interiors carry the same register — cream plaster walls, dark-stained millwork, and tile-surround fireplaces anchoring guest rooms furnished with four-poster beds and paisley bedding in tobacco and gold. Framed Western landscape paintings hang above each hearth, a curatorial gesture that aligns the rooms with the painterly tradition of the American mountain West. The main dining room is the property's most considered interior space: exposed Douglas fir ridge beams overhead, a limestone fireplace of generous scale along one wall, and large iron-and-glass lanterns suspended from the apex of the vault, casting the room in a warm, honeyed light that belongs entirely to the mountains outside.

"The accounting dept of this admittedly high end Hotel is ran by an incompetent buffoon (specifically a rude woman who proudly and condescendingly identified herself as Audrey Garcia, who likes to hang up on clients after challenging them to leave negative reviews blah blah blah…). Via an accounting “error” she admitted charging my card (provided at check-in for incidentals only), after our company pre-paid for roughly 30 rooms at $949 each and Montage has refused to refund or provide any resemblance of an explanation as to what the charge was possibly for. I’d never trust this origination again, despite the Hotel being a rather nice venue all in all."

"Over-rated and Over-priced hotel. NOT the #1 ski hotel in North America ! Swarms of noisy kids all over the place. Drinks small and prices high. Food substandard at Apex. My wife had rotten mussels in her Ciopinno and I had rotten crab meat in my Linguine. Slopes were very crowded and kids everywhere. NOT worth $3300/night for the lowest category room!"

"An Exceptional Stay - Truly One of the Best I travel all over the world frequently, staying at hotels from boutique properties to luxury resorts, and I can honestly say this was one of the best stays I have ever experienced. From the moment I arrived, it was clear this property operates at a completely different level. The attention to detail was impeccable - not in an over-the-top way, but in the kind of thoughtful, genuine touches that make you feel truly cared for. The management team set the tone for excellence. You could feel their commitment to creating an exceptional experience in every interaction. They weren't just managing a property - they were cultivating a place where guests feel valued, comfortable, and genuinely welcomed. And then there's Murphy, the hotel dog, who deserves his own five-star review. His presence added such warmth and personality to the property. It's rare to find that perfect balance of professionalism and homey comfort, and Murphy was the perfect embodiment of that. Every detail was considered - from the quality of the amenities to the responsiveness of the staff to the genuine care that permeated every aspect of my stay. This is what hospitality should feel like. When you've stayed in as many hotels as I have, you develop a keen sense for what separates good from truly exceptional. This property is exceptional in every way. I'll absolutely be back, and I'll be recommending this place to everyone I know who travels to the area. Thank you for setting the standard so high. You've earned a loyal guest."
