PB hotel design editorial

At the mid-mountain base of Deer Valley's Silver Lake area, where the ski runs of one of America's most manicured resorts converge, a Norwegian Olympic gold medalist lent more than his name to a hotel. Stein Eriksen Lodge, opened in 1982 and expanded significantly over the following decades, was conceived as a direct architectural translation of its namesake's Scandinavian heritage — steep-pitched rooflines, heavy exposed timber framing, and rough-cut local sandstone piers grounding the building against the Wasatch hillside. The entrance pavilion visible in the images, with its soaring glazed gable and bracketed eaves, draws clearly from Nordic lodge vernacular while scaling up to the demands of a full-service mountain resort property. Norwegian flags flanking the entry drive and a bronze skier statue reinforce the cultural lineage without tipping into pastiche. Inside, the interiors pursue a mountain-grand register that balances rusticity with warmth rather than trophy-lodge excess. Guest rooms carry exposed wood beam ceilings — both structural and applied — alongside leather-paneled headboards, plaid upholstered armchairs, and stone-surround fireplaces that anchor the rooms in genuine craft. Faux-fur bench throws and hand-forged iron hardware add tactile weight to what might otherwise soften into generic ski-country comfort. The pool terrace, terraced across multiple levels in coursed stonework and anchored by a rock-feature hot spring centerpiece, extends the architectural language outdoors, with the ski mountain rising directly behind as an unstageable backdrop.

"I followed up my stay at the Stein Eriksen Residences with a stay at the Stein Eriksen Lodge - what an incredible experience. I am a big fan of Deer Valley and have been lucky enough to experience all of the top tier lodging on the mountain. While the competitors are all impressive, they do not match the 5+ star hospitality that is consistently delivered at SEL. Location is the best, service from all of the SEL team members is the best and all of the various services offered from restaurants/apres ski/ski valet are as good as it gets. If AI was creating the demo of an iconic ski resort, they would copy the Stein Eriksen Lodge operation. While the grounds throughout are amazing, what impresses me most is how every single team member that I experience is on the top of their game. Kudos to Stein Erikson Lodge - see you next year."

"I visited the Stein Erickson 15 years ago and had the cheese fondue in the afternoon with friends. I knew I wanted to stay there sometime in the future -well 15 years later-We stayed last week for three nights. This year’s weather was not good for skiing as they had little snow this year. We only skied one day lift tickets are $380 a day per person plus $100 ski rental fees. James was outstanding in the Stein Erickson rental department. He was so kind to help my husband as he never skied before. Our room upon arrival I had lights that were not working a white cloth on the ground by the bed and only half a roll of toilet paper-for $1,500 a night you would think that everything would be perfect, but it wasn’t. I informed the front desk and they did clean it up and fixed everything. The front desk was OK for $1,500 a night. You would think that they would be more gracious and they were not. They kind of locked themselves behind the desk and we’re not overly friendly or kind or helpful.. We toured the property and they do have a small arcade that is free. You can play unlimited on a few machines.. The hot chocolate was good at night in the lobby and during the day they did have lemon fruit water, which was very nice. The main restaurant was terrific or buffet or breakfast service was excellent and the Troll restaurant was very very good for lunch and dinner. We had the Voss still water because the regular tap water was not very good. The chocolate fondue is one of the best. It really does serve 4 to 5 people. We ordered one night for the two of us and it was way too much. Service was very good during the day and night at the Troll. The free shuttle service was a little slower than you would like in fact, my husband and I wanted to go check out the St. Regis Hotel and Javier the shuttle bus driver took off without my husband in the van and I said wait a minute my husband’s coming he did not listen to me and I finally shouted stop and he pulled over and my husband was so upset running up to the van -we reported him. The spa was very nice and I would recommend having the foot service by Wendy. I wish I would’ve talked to the general manager of the Stein Erickson. They need to step it up a little bit, especially if there’s no snow. The only way I’d ever return is if there is tons of snow and I would call ahead to the general manager to make sure that everything will be taken care of before we checked in. stain was a phenomenal person. Everybody we talked to that had known him said he was a character. He was a wonderful man so people need to look up who Stein Erickson is. He was incredible."

"Overall: Amazing, stress-free stay. Perfect ski in/ski out location near Silver Lake Lodge. Taking the kids skiing by myself was easy thanks to the exceptional staff and facilities. Worth the price and already looking to book for Christmas. Ski Concierge: Brilliant and proactive. They anticipated every need—no lugging equipment or skis for me or the kids. The Room: Having a private hot tub in the room, ready to use, was a highlight. Housekeeping and turn-down service were flawless. Dining: Breakfast at Glitretind buffet was high-quality with great variety. Champion Club: We visited daily. The waitress remembered our order after day one and had drinks ready on arrival. Great food and atmosphere and no wait for the kids' games. Great fun watching the Super Bowl here. Spa & Gym: Wonderful spa facilities and staff. Enjoyed the hot tub and cold plunge. Massage was nice. The oxygen therapy and leg compression treatment were a nice and relaxing way to reset after a day on the slopes. Only room for improvement: The gym only had one yoga mat."
