PB hotel design editorial

Perched at 8,000 feet on Empire Pass above Deer Valley Resort, a twelve-storey tower clad in warm Utah sandstone and heavy timber framing rises from a ridgeline with a directness that makes most ski hotels feel apologetic about their scale. The St. Regis Deer Valley, which opened in 2009, was designed by FFKR Architects with a mountain vernacular vocabulary — steeply pitched rooflines, deep overhanging eaves, coursed stone base — that draws on the National Park lodge tradition without replicating it literally. A dedicated funicular connects the base arrival to the main hotel entrance, a detail that signals the site's serious vertical drama even before guests reach the lobby. Inside, the 181 rooms and suites carry a palette of warm wheat-colored grasscloth walls, cherry-stained wood trim, and patterned wool carpeting in blue and grey that keeps the atmosphere closer to a well-appointed mountain residence than a resort statement. The restaurant unfolds around a stacked-slate fireplace wall, its leather club chairs and clustered blown-glass pendant chandeliers creating a room that holds its warmth against floor-to-ceiling views of snow-covered slopes. The outdoor pool terrace, its freeform basin edged in the same rough-cut sandstone that defines the building's base, wraps along the mountainside with heated water and a series of terraced sun decks — a composition that works equally well against summer green and deep winter white.

"We just got back from this resort after spending 4 nights here for a family ski trip. We have been before over the summer as a couple but first time skiing. The service every where in the hotel is amazing and personal. They really went above and beyond for us to make sure our experience was great. Amaria at the front desk is fabulous and has a great future in hospitality. We loved the ski concierge above any other ski resort we have been to- they are great and so helpful One thing that was missing was an area for teens and kids."

"My wife and I have traveled the world for many years and stayed in countless luxury hotels so what I have to say is very measured by our experiences. This particular St. Regis ranks as the number one service hotel we’ve ever been to! ! From the moment we arrived earlier this week we were amazed at the servant culture that has been established here by the management. We’ve hosted Horst Schulze the founder of Ritz Carlton who has spoken many times for our organization about culture curation and let me say this hotel has it down to the tee. The manager on duty , I believe his name was Thomas , upgraded our room from a mountainside King to an executive suite when he discovered they had given us a handicap room. After buying coffee one morning we were contacted by their cafe asking if we would like the same order delivered to our room every morning at whatever time we needed. I accidentally dropped a $500 gift card one day and the bell girl knew our name and found us and returned it promptly! Every time I walked by one of their staff most of the time they called me by name and asked if they could serve us in any way. I told my wife it almost feels like they think we’re celebrities! From the restaurant wait staff to the ski valet to the shuttle service it was like that everywhere we went. This is a beautiful hotel in a perfect location but the staff here takes it to another level! Well done St. Regis Deer Valley team ! You’re the best I’ve ever seen!"

"Spa is not great. First off I did not stay at the hotel so this review is specifically for the spa as I stay in a neighboring condo and booked a massage. Booking is very easy online and I booked a 9am 60 minute massage. I arrived early and the spa was closed so I wandered around the shops and lobby and promptly arrived at the spa at 9am which is when they open. I stood in the spa reception area for 5-10 minutes before someone finally showed and she asked if I’d been checked in, I told her I had not. Another 5 minutes go by. Then I’m rushed to the locker area by the manager and I ask if my massage is at 9:30 thinking maybe I’m mistaken given they weren’t open and weren’t present to check me in so maybe I have plenty of time. The manager comes back and tells me it is in fact at 9am and that I should hurry. So I undress and put on my robe but there’s no one to show me to where I’m meeting my therapist so I wander more.long story short all this actually was used to cut into my massage time, which is simply absurd. How could I possibly be ready to go at exactly 9 when you’re not even open and then you don’t have anyone at reception? So my 60 minute massage was more like 40-45 minutes. The whirlpool was also not open despite the fact that I called several days ahead to ask about amenities and was not told. When I said something on my way out at checkout to the woman checking me out the manager was standing there on the phone and cut me off and even in front of whoever she was on the phone with told the woman I was speaking to not to speak to me and that she would handle it and then told me that this woman “works for her”. I then explained to her my dissatisfaction and she just acted like I was crazy. I have never in my life had such a ridiculous experience at a high end spa and am really surprised that this is the level of service the St Regis is happy delivering. I will go to another resort spa next time."

"the food was horrible my grilled cheese was uncooked and they didn’t even give me my COOKIE. I do not recommend if ur with family or if you want a budget sustainable lunch. One thing of mac and cheese was 15 dollars for craft mac and cheese."

"We are frequent luxury travelers and longtime St. Regis guests (including multiple stays at St. Regis Aspen). Unfortunately, our stay at St. Regis Deer Valley fell well short of 5-star standards. Over the course of our stay, we experienced a pattern of service failures: • Repeatedly given incorrect information about ski rentals and never told that rentals could be handled inside the hotel at Jans, despite asking via email, concierge, and front desk • Poor dinner experience at La Stelina • A crib delivered with a mattress too small, filled with towels to compensate • Returned from skiing, jacuzzi, and showers to find no bath towels in the room • In-room dining order lost entirely and later found to have been sent to the wrong room due to staff assumptions • Another room in our party had hot-water issues, confirmed by the building engineer • Late-night knocking to retrieve a dining cart that had already been picked up Individually, these are manageable. Collectively, they point to systemic issues. What truly escalated this situation was our meeting with the Director of Rooms. Rather than acknowledging the issues, he repeatedly made excuses, cited “conflicting information,” and implied these events could not have occurred because the property is “one of the top-rated St. Regis hotels in the world.” The clear implication was that we were not being truthful. That interaction left us frustrated and deeply disappointed. A luxury hotel should never dismiss guests or hide behind brand reputation instead of taking accountability. This is not a Holiday Inn, and guests paying (or redeeming points equivalent to) $2,500+ per night should not be treated this way. We have never experienced this level of defensiveness or service breakdown at other St. Regis properties. We hope management takes this feedback seriously, because the current experience does not justify the brand positioning."
