PB hotel design editorial

Perched at 8,000 feet on Empire Pass above Deer Valley Resort, a twelve-storey tower clad in warm Utah sandstone and heavy timber framing rises from a ridgeline with a directness that makes most ski hotels feel apologetic about their scale. The St. Regis Deer Valley, which opened in 2009, was designed by FFKR Architects with a mountain vernacular vocabulary — steeply pitched rooflines, deep overhanging eaves, coursed stone base — that draws on the National Park lodge tradition without replicating it literally. A dedicated funicular connects the base arrival to the main hotel entrance, a detail that signals the site's serious vertical drama even before guests reach the lobby. Inside, the 181 rooms and suites carry a palette of warm wheat-colored grasscloth walls, cherry-stained wood trim, and patterned wool carpeting in blue and grey that keeps the atmosphere closer to a well-appointed mountain residence than a resort statement. The restaurant unfolds around a stacked-slate fireplace wall, its leather club chairs and clustered blown-glass pendant chandeliers creating a room that holds its warmth against floor-to-ceiling views of snow-covered slopes. The outdoor pool terrace, its freeform basin edged in the same rough-cut sandstone that defines the building's base, wraps along the mountainside with heated water and a series of terraced sun decks — a composition that works equally well against summer green and deep winter white.

"We had a wonderful stay at the St. Regis Deer Valley. As Marriott Platinum Elite members, we were generously upgraded to a beautiful suite with a full kitchen, two balconies, and two fireplaces. The suite was fantastic and made our stay especially comfortable and memorable. What really stood out, though, was the service. Spencer at the front desk was extremely helpful and went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. He surprised us by sending a bottle of wine and a charcuterie board to our room along with a personal note. We also loved being able to enjoy excellent hiking directly from the resort. One thing to be aware of is that seating around the pool was somewhat limited, so during busier times it could be difficult to find a place to sit. Overall, the property is beautiful, the accommodations were exceptional, and the service was outstanding. A special thank you to Spencer for helping make our visit so memorable. We would absolutely return to the St. Regis Deer Valley."

"We were lucky enough to stay one night here on our road trip home. We got a suite which came with butler services. Highly recommend that you do the same! It was incredible. The room is so spacious and so beautifully appointed. It had 1.5 bathrooms, full kitchen, and patio with views of the mountain. We were greeted with a lovely charcuterie and fruit plate and a personalized dog bowl. The butler team provided top notch service all around; they were pro-active, communicative and quick to respond. Truly, we received excellent service from everyone we encountered from the valet to the front desk to our server to our bell hop, everyone was very kind and helpful. It was a great place to travel with our dog as there was a lot of grassy areas to take him for a walk and potty breaks. The Bloody Mary is a must try! I've had several signature Bloody Mary's from other St. Regis locations and this one is THE BEST, in my humble opinion. My only "critique" is the patio situation; the gates are wrought iron and only about 3 feet high, so no real privacy when you are sitting outside. This was a perfect stop on our long drive home, and I can't wait to come back and stay longer!"

"The St. Regis, Deer Valley, Hotel is an impressive luxury hotel. The enchanting entrance has striking lights on the sides, waterfalls, and little lanterns that glow at night. The hotel has a pool, two hot tubs, and great access to the ski area. You get on your skis at the lower lobby, ski for about ten minutes, then take a gondola up the mountain. At every good hotel you need good food. The St. Regis has three amazing restaurants, including a breakfast buffet. There is a large menu for kids at all of them. Also at every hotel, you want to have a room to spend the night. We had four people with three beds, but I’m pretty sure you can fit more people if you order cots. There were two rooms (one had a king bed for my parents and one had two queen beds for my brother and me). There is beautiful birch furniture that’s really comfortable and has extra pillows. The two bathrooms had two tubs, two showers, and two toilets. Unfortunately, the music players were impossible to find and activate. Finally, there are equally special events for kids and adults. I especially liked the stands for hot apple cider and amazing hot cocoa with toppings (chocolate shavings, marshmallows, and whipped cream). They were open all day long, even at midnight. The Champagne Blade is when the manager takes a bottle of champagne and strikes off the top with a sword. There is champagne for adults and fermented apple cider for kids. You can also watch the ski tournament/race every day from the hotel terrace and pool area, and also from some of the rooms that are facing the ski mountain. This makes a splendid experience. I think the St. Regis Hotel is a great resting place for your skiing trip. Samuel L. (gr.4, age 9)"

"We had a nice stay at St Regis, lovely room though a bit worn, the Rime restaurant was excellent though pricey as was the spa. Special note - We got an incredible massage by Angelica … one of the best! Thoughtful and diligent job. The shared spaces were gorgeous and the staff are attentive and catch every ask or question. Nice work!! About the only challenge I have is when I compare to their peers they don’t have much in the way of outside activities which when you take into account the high resort and mandatory parking fees you don’t get what you would get at a similar 5 star in the area. As to the room bed was great but the floors were pretty beaten up (check out the deep groves by the tv from years of repeated dragging the tv table !) and some of the furniture seemed to be worn out. If you’re 5 star you shouldn’t have that."

"We just got back from this resort after spending 4 nights here for a family ski trip. We have been before over the summer as a couple but first time skiing. The service every where in the hotel is amazing and personal. They really went above and beyond for us to make sure our experience was great. Amaria at the front desk is fabulous and has a great future in hospitality. We loved the ski concierge above any other ski resort we have been to- they are great and so helpful One thing that was missing was an area for teens and kids."
