PB hotel design editorial

White clapboard and dark shutters on Manchester's Main Street have marked this corner since the early twentieth century, when the building first served as a gathering point for visitors drawn to Vermont's Green Mountains. Reopened in 2015 after a thorough renovation by Stonestreet Studios, the Kimpton Taconic Hotel works within that Colonial Revival shell — hipped rooflines, covered wraparound porch, fieldstone retaining walls at street level — to deliver something that feels less like a hotel conversion than a particularly well-appointed country house that happens to have 85 rooms across three floors. The interiors translate the surrounding landscape into a consistent material language: dark four-poster beds with upholstered headboards, leather bench seats with nailhead trim, barley-twist chair legs, and buffalo-check accent pillows that telegraph Berkshire-adjacent outdoor culture without veering into kitsch. Flooring shifts register depending on the program — wide-plank oak in the tavern-style restaurant, where reclaimed timber ceiling beams and a stone fireplace anchor an atmosphere closer to a serious New England tap room than a hotel bar, and carpet in a small houndstooth weave through the guest corridors and rooms. On the rear lawn, white Adirondack chairs arranged across cropped grass facing a white-painted pool house establish the kind of unhurried outdoor sequence that makes Vermont properties worth the drive from New York in the first place.

"We always love visiting the Kimpton Taconic and it never fails to impress! Check-in is always a breeze, the rooms are very comfortable and quiet, and the front-desk staff (a shout-out to Celeste and Jaydoura!) is always available to help or make recommendations for dinner, etc."

"One of our favorite places to visit. Kimpton Taconic is a great option if you are visiting Manchester, VT. It is warm and inviting with a sophisticated yet casual ambiance. The staff is friendly and the sitting area off the lobby has a beautiful fireplace. The evening social hour is always a hit with many guests and dogs mingling. If you do not like dogs, I would reconsider staying at any Kimpton. The hotels are dog friendly and the Taconic is particularly welcoming, something guests like me count as a positive. Our dog Abby loves visiting! One thing to note, the ice melt they use outside the hotel is not pet safe so paws need protection in the winter. The hotel rooms are small but comfortable and nicely appointed. The attached restaurant, The Copper Grouse is highly recommended too! Shout out to Curtis at the front desk. He is an example of the friendly staff we encounter at the hotel from the front desk to the restaurant employees and housekeeping, everyone is welcoming. The location of the hotel is another plus. Manchester is growing and there are many restaurants and shops to visit. Many restaurants in town are closed on Sunday and Monday so plan accordingly. There is a new brew pub which was fun to visit and there are local stores (looking at you Zippy Chicks) that are not outlets and well worth a visit for unique, affordable treasures. In general, the town has become expensive. I'm sure it draws from wealthy tri-state locales but the quality is high and it is an easy drive from many areas."

"I’m not sure how often hotels get a “complimentary” email recognizing staff, so want to make sure travelers know what a special destination experience the Kimpton Taconic, Manchester, VT consistently delivers! I am thankful for the staff who over the years have made every stay just perfect. From front desk to bellman, housekeeping, maintenance and those in the Copper Grouse, I have received exceptional service each and every visit. Look forward to staying with you in the new year, see you in January!"

"We stayed in a cottage suite which was very comfortable and roomy. The electric fireplace kept the living area nice and warm. The small refrigerator was a nice surprise. Our pet sitter canceled at the last moment, so we really appreciated the fact that this hotel was dog friendly."

"Staying here this week for Thanksgiving, second year here. Generally very good but restaurant hours are erratic at best. When it’s slow the staff treats you like gold but when it gets slammed the day before the holiday it gets sloppy (ie drinks are poured short and staff barely acknowledges you). In addition, this hotel is SUPER pet friendly. Barking dogs all night long and when we checked in our carpet was soaking wet to the point we couldn’t walk on it for a few hours from the spot treatments."
