PB hotel design editorial

Perched on a 12,000-acre plateau in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, where the Highland County ridgeline drops away in every direction to folded ranges of blue-green forest, the Lodge at Primland is an exercise in making a large building feel like it belongs to its landscape rather than dominates it. The main lodge structure — clad in local stone and heavy timber, its profile broken by a distinctive circular tower that appears prominently in the aerial view — was designed to echo the vernacular of Appalachian hunting retreats while delivering the scale of a full resort. Completed in 2012, the property draws on the surrounding hardwood forest as its primary material source, with white oak flooring, cedar ceiling planking, and hand-selected stone coursing appearing consistently across guest rooms, the spa pool hall, and the dining room. The interiors carry the atmosphere of a private mountain house assembled over generations rather than specified in a single season. Guest rooms pair wide-plank oak floors with woven rattan bench stools, twig-form floor lamps, and dark-stained chestnut case goods — a palette that shifts between warm cream plaster and raw wood grain without ever tipping into rusticity. The tower suites are the most architecturally distinctive spaces, their curved walls wrapped in continuous glazing that frames panoramic ridge views, a steel-railed mezzanine level cutting through the rounded volume. The dining room's cedar ceiling, linear gas fireplace, and tall wood-framed windows at dusk reinforce the same ethos: the mountain is always the main event.

"Amazing time in Primland, as usual! Hospitality is one-of-a-kind. Activities and dining are impeccable. Very unique place to visit and we will continue to visit for years to come, as we have been doing."

"Primland is an amazing place. The experiences are all fun and high quality and the staff very welcoming. We fished, hunted, shot clays, and golfed in a four-day getaway."

"Just back from a four-night stay at Primland with our kids (6 and 8) - and it exceeded expectations. This place quietly works extremely well for families. Highlights: • Indoor pool open to kids 24 hours = huge win • Fairway Cabin: spacious, comfortable, ideal for a family • Hiking trails: beautiful, easy, and actually kid-friendly • Stables dinner: standout meal + atmosphere • Game room at the Stables: exceptionally well done What really stood out was the staff. Warm across the board, with special thanks to Isaac (ropes course) and Autumn (Stables), who went out of their way to engage and teach our kids. Big picture: Primland feels underrated as a family destination (at least with families from Charlotte) - but likely not for long, especially with more dining and outdoor pools coming. Two quick notes: • Concierge is tucked away, and the front desk won’t assist, just redirects. Not ideal if you plan on the fly like I do. Maybe this is temporary. • Observatory is allegedly incredible, but not accessible for younger kids. A short pre-session intro for families would be a great add. Overall: we’d absolutely return. Luxury, outdoors, and kid-friendly without feeling like a kid resort."

"Our room was beautiful, as were the lodge and the views. The spa, observatory, guided hunting, pond fishing, ropes course and kids club, as well as the special Easter events, were tremendous hits with the whole family (including 2 children aged 8 and 11). We were never bored but had plenty of relaxation time as well, spent in the suite or by the pool (it is an indoor pool, but the doors all open, giving it a very indoor/outdoor feel). The property is massive so it takes some time to move from the lodge to activities, but there is a fleet of shuttles and great drivers working constantly to transport guests from place to place. One tip is that given the size of the property, and its relatively remote location, you will be reliant on what they offer in terms of food, beverages, sundries, etc. if possible, I would suggest stopping and grabbing some easy snacks to have handy (granola bars, etc.) for a quick bite. To that end, I would note that our room had a small refrigerator with complimentary soft drinks and space to keep leftovers, but did not have a microwave."
