PB hotel design editorial

Against the long backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains and rolling Piedmont farmland that Thomas Jefferson surveyed from Monticello just a few miles west, the terracotta-roofed villa complex of Keswick Hall sits at the centre of a 600-acre estate whose history stretches back to the nineteenth century. The current property — reopened in 2021 after an extensive renovation led by the Olmsted-influenced landscape firm and with interiors by Champalimaud Design — replaced a much-loved but dated country house hotel with something more assured in its Mediterranean Revival massing, white stucco facades, and arched loggias looking out across Pete Dye's golf course. The 48-room configuration keeps the property intimate despite its grandeur, with the infinity pool terrace serving as the resort's emotional centre, travertine decking stepping down toward fairways and water features that dissolve into the tree line. Inside, Champalimaud's approach leans into a quietly American country register: panelled walls painted in soft grey-white, blue-and-cream striped textiles used at headboards and on upholstered chaise longues, nailhead-trimmed linen beds set on dark-stained hardwood floors anchored by woven geometric rugs in powder blue. The bar brings a darker warmth — rich walnut millwork, a broad bookmatched marble counter with dramatic grey veining, and striped barstools pulling the same cool blue through the room. The effect throughout is closer to a very well-appointed Virginia gentleman's estate than to conventional resort design, which is precisely the point.

"Beautifully renovated resort! We were celebrating my birthday, and the staff surprised me with a bottle of champagne and chocolates upon arrival. Our room was beautiful and included a spacious terrace overlooking the golf course. Although pricey, it was money well spent as the resort spares no expense to make you comfortable, including lovely Frette bath robes. The resort has ample parking and we were able to charge our Tesla (Tesla charger) at no charge throughout our stay. Our room was immaculate and included evening turndown. We enjoyed an a la carte breakfast each morning and dined in their signature restaurant on our first evening. The resort's proximity to wineries, Monticello and the city of Charlottesville is a bonus!"

"My husband and I spent 3 relaxing nights over the Christmas holiday at Keswick Hall. It is a lovely property with various rooms and nooks to gather or sit quietly, including a billiards room, a library, a bar, a small coffee shop, and two larger sitting rooms behind the front desk. Our room was spacious, clean, modern, quiet and comfortable and had a large terrace overlooking the beautiful golf course. We lucked out and had warm weather on our first day, enabling us to enjoy the terracein winter. The hotel has a low-key vibe for the holidays with subtle decorations. Families with small children visiting over the holiday may prefer a facility that has children activities. Water bottles are provided in the room, with water filling stations located on each floor. Turndown service is provided, but no chocolates are given. I thought that at least a small treat might be left on Christmas Eve. The main restaurant, Marigold, the spa, the fitness center and the tennis center are in separate buildings so you have to go outside to access them. But it only was about a 1-3 minute walk to any of the buildings. A big umbrella was provided in the room in case of inclement weather. The food at Marigold's was excellent. We got great massages at the beautiful spa. The spa has a wonderful relaxation room, with chaise lounges that look out onto a wooded section of the property. While the spa lacks a hot tub, very nice steam room and sauna are available. The fitness center is well-equipped, including two peloton bikes and a fitness room where some morning classes are held (unsure if they are complimentary). Bicycles are available too. You are allowed to walk along the residential area within the property (two routes of 2-4 miles), but you are not allowed to walk along the golf cart paths during the off-hours. The property had various tennis courts, two pickleball courts and two outdoor pools. The main pool, adjacent to the main hotel, was undergoing maintenance during our stay. It looks like it is stunning. The family pool, at the tennis court facility, was very nice and open during our stay, heated to 85 degrees. But I believe it closes soon for the balance of the winter. Charlottesville's Downtown Pedestrian Mall is maybe a 15-min drive. Montepelier, James Monroe's house, is a 35 minute drive and well worth a visit. Monticello and U of VA are nearby too along with a wide variety of hikes. We did the short, 5-mile Blue Ridge Tunnel hike, maybe a 30 minute drive. We also spotted a couple of vineyards. In other words, plenty to do in the picturesque area if you want to go off property. I definitely would visit again."
