PB hotel design editorial

At the edge of Charlottesville's downtown mall, where the university town's liberal arts identity brushes against its appetite for contemporary development, a ten-story new-build wrapped in terracotta-orange paneling and dark grey cladding makes a confident case for modern civic architecture. The Draftsman, which joined Marriott's Autograph Collection in 2017, takes its name from the technical drawing tradition that gave Thomas Jefferson his particular genius — a fitting conceit for a hotel positioned between the historic Lawn at UVA and the city's working neighborhoods. The interiors carry the concept with more discipline than these programs usually manage. The lobby pairs cream leather sofas and olive wingback chairs on a faded botanical rug with a coffered ceiling fitted with mirrored panels, the effect tilted toward a professor's well-appointed study rather than standard-issue boutique hotel. Guest rooms sustain the caliber: warm walnut millwork, geometric-patterned carpets in steel blue and grey, and floor-to-ceiling black-framed windows that push the Blue Ridge Mountains into the composition like a hanging canvas. The ground-floor restaurant works in an entirely different key — exposed spiral ductwork, raw concrete columns, copper pendant lights, and open steel shelving establish an industrial register that connects back to the building's brick-and-metal street presence. Local artwork appears throughout, grounding the property in Charlottesville's specific cultural moment rather than in the generalities of collegiate hospitality.

"The parking/valet/guest service team at the Draftsman Charlottsville is awesome! From calling in advance to request robes be in our room, to arrival and ease of check-in, the restaurant and bar staff, Rosy in housekeeping and a shout out to Charlie and Lauren at the valet stand! We can’t wait to be back!"

"Everyone was extremely kind and accommodating. The staff was polite and made us feel like we were at home. My son just had surgery and I was in and out of valet in my car. The staff made it appear as it was never a hassle. In fact, Lauren went out of her way (with a smile!) to get a bag out of the trunk of my car and bring it down to the lobby for me. So grateful!"

"I am a frequent traveler and a Marriott Titanium Elite member, so I base my hotel reviews on both the brand’s standards and my personal experiences. I stayed three nights at The Draftsman, Charlottesville, University, Autograph Collection and had a very pleasant experience overall. We stayed in a standard room, which was nice, well maintained, and fully functional for the duration of our stay. I was recognized as a Titanium Elite member at check-in and received a breakfast credit each morning. Breakfast was menu-based rather than a buffet, and I quite enjoyed both the selection and the quality of the food. Service in the restaurant was friendly and attentive. The staff throughout the hotel were consistently pleasant, including the front desk, valet, and restaurant staff. We chose to valet park the car during our stay, and the valet service was very responsive and efficient. We selected this hotel as a base for exploring presidential history in the area, including visits to Monticello and other nearby historic sites. The location worked well for this purpose, offering easy access by car while still being close to the University area. There are a few food and coffee options nearby, though the main downtown area of Charlottesville is about a mile away and not especially walkable. Overall, this was a comfortable and well-run property with good service, solid elite recognition, and a pleasant atmosphere. I enjoyed my stay and would be happy to stay here again"
