PB hotel design editorial

Built in 1912 as Lynchburg's grand civic hotel, the seven-story brick building at 712 Church Street carried the city's social life for decades before falling into prolonged decline — a fate that its 2015 restoration as The Virginian Lynchburg reversed with considerable care. The facade retains its original Beaux-Arts ornamental plasterwork framing the entrance canopy, iron cresting running along the awning's edge, and the period vertical signage that once announced arrival to travelers stepping off trains nearby. Inside, 109 rooms were fitted out in a palette that takes its cues from the building's early-twentieth-century bones without retreating into pastiche. Guest rooms carry mahogany-finished bed frames with arched upholstered headboards, brass reading sconces, and dark lacquered case pieces with gold-bar hardware — a register somewhere between restored club hotel and contemporary Southern hospitality. The cafe at street level makes the most of the original arched window openings, pairing hexagonal-tile flooring and white subway tile with branching brass globe chandeliers that feel genuinely of the moment. The dining room moves in a different direction — slate-blue walls, crushed-velvet banquettes, cowhide chair seats, and Murano-style burst pendants overhead — moody enough to read as a proper evening room. Throughout, the building's generous ceiling heights and oversized original windows do much of the design work, lending rooms a proportion that newer construction in the Curio Collection portfolio rarely matches.

"Jonathan and Marty were very respectful, friendly, and helpful. They made our stay and experience even more enjoyable. Wonderful hotel. 10/10 would recommend."

"My husband and I have stayed here multiple times since our daughter attends Liberty. Jonathan is almost always working the valet during some point of our visit. They say the people make the place, and Jonathan is definitely one of those people. He is always kind, inviting, ready to help, and remembers us. Those little touches make all the difference. On our latest visit, we had the pleasure of meeting Marty at the valet. He was also very friendly, talked to us at length, recommended restaurants, and went out of his way to accommodate needs. It’s rare to find strong staff members like these two men. People like them are part of the reason we return when we are in town."

"I had the most LOVLEY time at the Virginian. I had breakfast at the rooftop, enjoyed my quiet time and got to be a witness to how attentive and caring the staff were to sleepy parents, and excited kiddos. I particularly remember the kindness of workers Steve and Maddie. They made what could have been an ordinary time, and extraordinary time. And the food was DELISH. Will always recommend breakfast on the rooftop."

"Stayed for one night while passing through. A very nice hotel, well restored with good size rooms and all the usual amenities. Free parking is available within steps of the hotel and no need for valet service (unless you want it). I also highly recommend the Skyline restaurant on the top floor for good food and superior service. My only negative, and this is not about the hotel, is that Lynchburg seems to be a dying town (and least in the area of the hotel). I never felt unsafe while walking around (the Lower Bluff Walk is nice), but on a Monday afternoon it felt like a ghost town. Nevertheless, if I'm ever again in Lynchburg I would stay here again."
