PB hotel design editorial

At the corner of Granby Street in downtown Norfolk, a 1912 Beaux-Arts office tower that once served as the home of the Dickson Building was converted and extended to become the Glass Light Hotel & Gallery, part of Marriott's Autograph Collection, when it opened in 2021. The fourteen-story structure, its upper cornice lit against the Virginia evening sky, was transformed by the Norfolk-based firm Kahler Slater working with interior designers who threaded a contemporary art-hotel concept through the building's classical bones. The lobby addition — visible in the images as a double-height gallery space with polished terrazzo floors, glass-and-steel curtain walls, and a cantilevered oak staircase with glass balustrades — functions as much as a commercial art gallery as a hotel entrance, with rotating sculpture and large-format paintings displayed on white plinths and gallery-track lighting overhead. The 107 guestrooms carry a palette of warm ash slatted headboard panels, teal hand-blown glass pendants, dark-stained wide-plank oak floors, and cognac leather sofas — a combination that feels more residential than corporate, grounded by white monogrammed bedding with fine navy border detail. Downstairs, the restaurant bar counter arrives in black-veined stone over a base of chevron-inlaid copper and dark wood, flanked by tan leather club chairs and punctuated by large-scale figurative paintings and a hot-pink ceramic sculpture that keeps the mood from tipping into solemnity. It is a hotel that has committed, seriously, to art as architecture rather than decoration.

Glass Light Hotel & Gallery, Autograph Collection Reviews

"Rude front desk person at check out. The check in is 4pm but she rudely told us she could not guarantee rooms would be ready at 4pm. Our room was not clean, was missing a desk chair and the table that supposed to sit beside the rocking chair. The desk is full of stuff, a mini bar, two art books, no room for someone to actually do any work. Stayed for 4 nights and never had housekeeping clean the room. We did get towels replaced after requesting them - as well as toilet paper (because remember the room was never cleaned). The room is very dark with limited lighting (in a hotel with the name Glass Light). To valet your car, you have to park in front of the building, it is on a busy street so if they don't move your car right away - which is the standard operating procedure, you have to park your car on the sidewalk or drive around until they decide to move a car. The housekeeping and staff are very loud and you can hear everything through the doors and wall. They yell out to one another in the hallway and have loud conversations although multiple rooms have do not disturb signs hanging on their doors Great bar - nice servers and a good location for all downtown Norfolk, but it doesn't make up for the rude front desk, dirty room missing furniture, lack of housekeeping and poor valet service. We travel quite a bit and for an Autograph Collection, the property falls short."

"Hotel was stunning and room was comfortable. Bed and pillows were soft and I got a great nights sleep. Towels were soft, nice coffee maker, free bottles water, shower had great pressure and got hot quickly…the list goes on. Perfect hotel for a quick weekend trip to Norfolk! Great cocktails at the bar as well! I didn’t eat any of the food at the hotel though."

"This is awkward because while I’m writing a review of the overall hotel, my husband just stormed out of the room steaming mad. The room is fine. Roomy for a “city hotel” although at no time do I want pocket doors and an opaque window for the shower. BUT we just returned to the room from a day out and although our room was made up, I noticed there was only one towel… for two of us. What? Also this morning my husband noticed that the shower gel dispenser (so common with hotels nowadays) was empty and I thought surely the room attendant would fill it when they cleaned today, but no. When we went to call the front desk to ask for another towel and some soap, there was no answer. My husband, as previously mentioned, went down and although there was no guests at the desk was told it had just been very busy which is why they couldn’t answer and also he was told there was no a manger on duty. Aside from the immediate issues, there are 3 elevator banks in this hotel and only one is working, this isn’t up for debate, there is only one. One has never left the first floor, one is visibly under repair and only one is working. The TV’s in the room laaaaaaaag. Woof. The buffering makes it almost impossible to watch anything. The bartenders are great, the food was delicious and the location is prime but dang, the basics are missing."

"We go to Norfolk and Virginia Beach quite often and as we live 4 hours away need overnight accomodations. We have stayed in many hotels and have seen Gaslight Autograph on many lists of nice hotels but when we have checked the price it was north of $300/night and so we never booked it before this most recent trip. We got a room fur $165/night I thought I would take the opportunity to try it. We found the hotel no trouble . Downtown Norfolk, great location. But my husband had to get out of the car and find the valet while I circled the block. It was 18 degrees out so we really did not want to self park. He did find the valet who was very nice and helpful. We checked in. Went to the room. The key did not work. My husband went be down to the desk while I waited upstairs. They changed our room to solve the problem. Our original room would have had a view . The new room was interior with 4 windows looking directly into other windows but it was larger based on the map on the door. In the hallway they set out water and some fruit. The room was quite nice and well designed. You did not need a PhD to figure out the lighting and there were enough hangers and an adorable Frigidaire mini fridge to put your water in. High quality soap, shampoo and body wash. Nice heavy towels. Illy coffee machine. Heavenly bed linens and pillows. The door did not fit the frame well so light from the hall way leaked in but was easily blocked. Be sure to visit the glass gallery attached to the hotel - beautifully displayed and lovely. We tried to get a drink at the bar when we returned from the opera but it was swamped. Looked like a nice spot though. Great refurbishment of a historic Norfolk building. Cudos!"

"I only stayed for one night , but this what I’ve noticed. Pros: * Great decor * Helpful staff * Additional safety, requiring key for the elevator * Close to port if you’re planning on cruising * Quite and clean Cons: * Bathroom door has no latch, so it won’t stay shut * Coffee pot malfunctioning due to descaling needed * Only one set of towels in the room, even when booked for 2 guests * No bathroom vent switch * Internet is super slow on TV and WiFi (do not recommend watching streaming apps) * Toilet bowl loose from the floor * Do not recommend using the Marriott Bon Voy app when requesting service * Paid parking (good luck finding convenient free parking)"
