PB hotel design editorial

Built in 1910 as a financial institution anchoring downtown Roanoke's commercial core, the Liberty Trust Building wore its civic ambitions plainly — limestone colonnades at street level, cream brick rising above, ornate iron balconies punctuating the facade with a formality that belonged entirely to the banking era. The Liberty Trust hotel, which opened in 2018 following an adaptive reuse conversion, preserved those bones with care: the original marble columns, terrazzo floors, and monumental vault doors survive intact in the ground-floor restaurant, where brass-studded leather stools and warm walnut tables are arranged around the former bank vault as though the room simply accumulated furniture over a century rather than being designed from scratch. Upstairs, the 54 guest rooms trade the lobby's Beaux-Arts weight for something lighter — mint-green walls, dark-stained walnut bed frames with deep button-tufted leather headboards, herringbone bed runners in teal and charcoal, and houndstooth accent pillows that nod to mid-century tailoring without overclaiming a period. The original double-hung windows, framed in chocolate-painted wood, frame long views across Roanoke's rooftops to the Blue Ridge in the distance, a reminder that the building's height was always meant to confer status on whoever stood inside it. The lobby arranges blush velvet wingbacks and dove-grey lounge chairs between the retained marble columns, globe-cluster brass floor lamps casting a warmth that the original banking hall would never have permitted.

"Liked the location-many attractions are walkable. Staff were very pleasant and helpful! Rooms are lovely and the food is excellent. Don’t be deterred by garage parking that is less than a block from the hotel."

"My stay at the The Liberty Trust Hotel in downtown Roanoke was nothing short of exceptional. The transformation of this historic former bank into a boutique hotel is absolutely stunning—the architecture and design beautifully preserve its character while offering modern comfort and style. From the moment I arrived, the staff were incredibly friendly, courteous, and professional, making me feel genuinely welcomed and well cared for throughout my stay. Their attention to detail and willingness to assist truly elevated the experience. The room itself was cozy and thoughtfully designed, with amazing amenities that made it both comfortable and luxurious. Every detail, from the furnishings to the overall ambiance, contributed to a relaxing and memorable visit. If you’re looking for a unique and elegant place to stay in Roanoke, The Liberty Trust Hotel is a standout choice. I would absolutely return and highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area."

"Don't bother. What a disappointing experience! The hotel is a converted historic bank, so had lots of potential. However, the rooms were barely adequate - tiny furniture spaces to put your stuff, everything was made of formica in the bedroom, coffee maker didn't work, etc. The worst thing was the noise! The train tracks are nearby (which didn't bother me after you got used to it) and there was very loud traffic noise, music nearby, and partying on the street below. No soundproofing whatsoever. I didn't go to sleep until the bars closed at 2am. Also, had a drink in the bar - an aperol spritz - one of the easiest drinks to make, but they added all kinds of fruit juices, and I don't think there was any prosecco or even wine. The whole experience was disappointing to say the least. They have a lot to improve."

"The lobby restaurant had a great atmosphere, but most seating was more sofa/chair cocktail than meal friendly. But the apps we tried were very good. Our room featured a "classic queen"which we decided was code for a full size. Check in can be a little tricky if you have much luggage. There is a high curb. Parking is across the street. Very nice staff. Decor was interesting and fit the building perfectly."
