PB hotel design editorial

At the quieter end of First Avenue in downtown Seattle, where the financial district gives way to the waterfront bluff, a slim 21-storey tower built in 2003 houses Hotel 1000 with a directness that suits the city's no-nonsense character. The facade — pale limestone cladding punctuated by a teal-canopied entry and louvered upper floors — carries a restrained corporate confidence from the street, but the lobby interior tells a different story. A cascading installation of elongated hand-blown glass pendants fills the double-height ceiling above a reception desk faced in veined calacatta marble, a large-scale abstract canvas anchoring the wall behind. A glass-balustraded stair with marble-clad risers draws the eye upward, the whole composition suggesting a Pacific Northwest sensibility filtered through contemporary art-hotel ambition. The 120 guestrooms were refreshed in recent years with a palette drawn from Puget Sound itself — dove grey carpets patterned like weathered water, dusty rose and sage velvet upholstery, wall murals in washed watercolour blues behind upholstered channelled headboards. Black matte arc-and-globe pendants flank each bed in a configuration that echoes articulated task lighting without the industrial edge. The corner suites push floor-to-ceiling glazing to full advantage, framing the Sound, Elliott Bay ferry traffic, and the West Seattle ridgeline in a composition that changes with the light. The ground-floor restaurant trades in wide-plank white oak floors and an exposed painted ceiling, Sputnik-style brass chandeliers working against the darkened ductwork above in a contrast that feels deliberately urban.

"Overall, I was disappointed with my stay. Nothing horrible occurred but I expected more from a Michelin Key property. The biggest disappointment was a lack of room service. Any luxury hotel needs to offer a full room service menu. I booked via Amex FHR and did not receive a room upgrade. I know this is not guaranteed, but my “success” rate is about 75%. The credits I was entitled to through FHR were not applied correctly, necessitating a lot or back and forth during checkout. Also, as eluded to in other posts, they removed the $100 dining credit and replaced it with a spa credit of $200. I would prefer the dining credit. The bathroom sink in our room was leaking. The room was otherwise quite nice. Kudos for installing clear, simple light controls which is often not the case in newer hotels. The TV in the room should be larger and on a swivel so guests can watch from the sitting area. The valet and bell staff need to be more attentive and proactive in helping guests with their luggage. The location is good, just a couple blocks from the the waterfront. This could be a great hotel if the above issues are addressed. Note: I filled out a survey sent by the hotel and listed the same concerns. To his credit, the manager reached out to me and seemed genuinely interested in fixing the issues I brought up."

"You can skip this hotel. Price is not in line with the experience. Restaurant and bar are below average. The shower handle fell off when i went to start my shower and when reported to the front desk they seemed annoyed at having to deal with the problem."

"A nice hotel in a good location! As a hyatt globalist I'm glad this hotel joined hyatt. My only complaint was the breakfast credit was only $30 which wasn't enough for coffee and an entrée. The food was excellent, and service all around was as well."

"I booked this hotel through the Amex FHR program and it was clearly listed to include a $100 dining or spa credit. When I arrived the hotel said it was now a $200 spa only credit. Sounds good, except the spa had no appointments available and closed early that day, so I was forced to use it at a very poor golf simulator. While I was able to order food at the golf simulator, I would have much rather gotten my original credit at the sit down restaurant. The hotel has no excuse for not reaching out to me with the change in benefits while I could still cancel the reservation, because they messaged me a few days earlier about check in and valet pricing, so they had a way to reach me. I understand that they changed from Hilton to Hyatt, but I booked it as an Amex Fine Hotel and was not treated under the terms of my reservation. This hotel would otherwise be a solid 4* as the room is quite nice, its a good location, and staff is friendly and helpful except for having no ability to honor the terms of the booking. It looks bad for the hotel and the Amex FHR program."
