PB hotel design editorial

At the corner of Fifth Avenue and Spring Street in downtown Seattle, a twelve-storey brick tower built in 1922 carries the kind of civic weight that most newer hotels spend millions trying to simulate. Kimpton Hotel Vintage Seattle was fitted into this terra-cotta-trimmed commercial building decades later, and the conversion has always worked precisely because the designers chose to honor the structure's early-twentieth-century solidity rather than disguise it — the regular grid of punched windows and the cream-painted base course visible in the exterior images remain essentially as built. Inside, the interiors pivot toward a wine-country theme rooted in Washington State viticulture, expressed through a palette of deep aubergine velvets, walnut-slatted headboards with carved black wood bed frames featuring scrollwork footboards, and damask-patterned carpets in charcoal and taupe. Artworks above the beds — horizontal panels assembled from what appear to be wine-cork mosaics in earthy purples and ochres — reinforce the concept without becoming heavy-handed. The lobby lounge is organized around a dramatically veined blue-grey onyx fireplace surround, its banded stone bookmatched to striking effect and paired with chartreuse barrel chairs, glass-topped side tables, and a laser-cut metal ceiling panel suspended over the communal table. The Tulio restaurant at street level, visible beneath its striped awning in the exterior photograph, carries the same darkly convivial character indoors — bentwood bar stools, terracotta-tile floors, and wainscoted walls holding their own against the ornate original plasterwork cornice.

"DO NOT STAY HERE. We chose Kimpton Hotel Vintage Seattle specifically because it advertises itself as dog-friendly, which made what happened during our stay extremely disappointing. We left our two dogs in the room briefly while we went out to eat — something that is commonly allowed at Kimpton properties and was not clearly communicated as prohibited at check-in. Shortly after, we received texts from the front desk saying our “pets miss you,” which quickly escalated to being told there had been “multiple complaints” and that we would need to find another hotel. ( photo of text below). All of these horrible interactions were with Tyne, front desk employee. When we asked for clarification, we were told the dogs were barking, were threatened with security involvement, and were refused access to the pet waiver we signed. We were also told that leaving dogs unattended was not allowed — which directly contradicts Kimpton’s dog-friendly policies and our prior experiences at other Kimpton hotels. What made this situation worse was that we repeatedly asked to speak with a manager and Tyne told us we were not allowed to do so. Being asked to leave mid-stay without being shown the policy we allegedly violated, and without access to management, was upsetting and unprofessional. If you’re traveling with pets, be aware that “dog-friendly” here may come with unclear rules, inconsistent enforcement, and no escalation path. I expected much better from a Kimpton property."

"I had a severe allergic reaction to their linens. Not sure what they wash them in, if at all. Yuck. But I had to go to urgent care to treat the breakout rash, and checked out a day early. Also, they have no housekeeping service. My room wasn’t cleaned at all during my stay."

"Ashley at the Front Desk and Mike J at the valet parking were both extremely kind and helpful. Excellent service and a lovely hotel. The glass of wine in the lobby upon arrival (evening happy hour) was also very nice. A very good hotel experience."

"STAY AWAY!! We stayed here for one night on my birthday. I asked the long hair reception dude if he could help make it special or do a complimentary upgrade to a room. His response was cold and unhelpful with a “I don’t give a damn” attitude. Absolutely no customer service etiquette. I highly doubt the hotel was fully booked. And guess what? He assigned us a room on level 2 which is street level. Thanks a lot Tarzan for making it memorable. To classify yourself as a 4 star hotel maybe provide your guests with at least clean and non ripped sheets. Even the bath towels were mismatched. This hotel is in desperate need of an upgrade but I guess they have to live up to their “vintage” name. I would never return or recommend this hotel. They nickel and dime you for everything. Resort fee is $30 and that doesn’t include Wi-Fi (extra $13/day). Valet parking is $60/day which is extremely steep. To the reviewer who claimed there is a 50% discount if you drive an electric car, shame on you for spreading lies. There is no such truth or unless the hotel staff is incompetent and don’t know their own policy. You can self park across the street for $45/day."

"I have stayed many times at Hotel Vintage Park. When I lived in the area in the 2000’s, it was a downtown staycation hotel, and I have stayed at least three times at Vintage Park since I moved away. My experiences here and at the nearby Monaco fueled my love for the Kimpton brand, and I have stayed in Kimptons for 20-plus years in cities throughout the country and even abroad, staying at a few multiple times. I think the wine in the lobby concept may have begun here (?), since the hotel is wine-themed with each room named after a Washington winery. So, it is a little difficult to give the hotel a mediocre review. The 4 stars is out of loyalty — I might give it 3 stars or lower if I didn’t have such a connection with the property. (I just went back and changed the rating to 3 - that is more accurate.) I have stayed many times at the nearby Fairmont Olympic over the years, and these hotels are different in almost all respects. The good parts — location is superlative. It is walking distance to virtually everything downtown and an easy stroll to Pikes and Pacific Places and Nordstrom, et al. My room was high (10th) and large and even had a water and sunset view, which is unusual. And the wine and traditional building are delightful. The restaurant, Tulio, is easily among the best in the entire city. The bad parts — upkeep has been poor over the past 20 years, and deferred maintenance is showing. Paint on the doors, walls and trim is scratched and in need, the halls are fairly dingy, with aging carpets. It feels like an aging hotel that has not had any real love or effort in far too long. I plan to stay at the Monaco next time to see if it is has been maintained any better. (I stayed in Denver Monaco the year before, and that hotel is also in need of serious refreshing, to say the least. My room was large and on the corner of a top floor. But the housekeeping closet is little in front of that door, and housekeeping left the door open and parked the carts right there. Not a good feeling at all for a hotel that has standards. Parking is excellent in terms of staffing and quality. But it is expensive at $60 a night. (Go for the parking package with the room.). Front desk staff is usually kind and good. I recommend it because it is an institution (for me) and part of many good memories. But I would be hesitant to recommend to anyone with higher standards or if the price were super high during a high season — there are definitely better options if prices are high."
