PB hotel design editorial

Belltown's particular genius has always been its refusal to settle into a single identity, and the 1910 brick building that houses The Palladian Hotel — a former office block on Fourth Avenue — carries that same productive ambiguity. Kimpton converted the property into a 97-room hotel in 2014, working with interior designer Susie Colling to build an atmosphere that splits the difference between Seattle's warehouse past and a certain kind of knowing, cabinet-of-curiosities eclecticism. The lobby desk, faced in deep-buttoned cognac leather with a warm brass cap rail, anchors the entry against walls finished in near-black, a grid of wooden key hooks behind the counter recalling the working hotel's analog past. A crystal pendant drops from the coffered ceiling beside it — the mix of registers deliberate, slightly theatrical. The guestrooms carry the same layered sensibility: dark-stained parquet floors, Persian kilims, vintage maps pinned above grass-cloth headboard panels, brass task lamps on marble-topped nightstands. A red rotary telephone introduces a flash of wit without tipping into pastiche. Downstairs, the restaurant wraps its dining room in floor-to-ceiling backlit wine shelving above tufted leather banquettes and cane-back bistro chairs — amber-warm and genuinely seductive. The cocktail bar goes darker still, a pressed-tin ceiling burnished to a deep copper over globe-lit bar lamps and a back bar dense with spirits. Throughout, the hotel earns its mood rather than simply declaring it.

"I recently stayed at the Kimpton Palladian Hotel by IHG in Seattle and had a great experience. The hotel has a stylish boutique vibe with unique décor, comfortable rooms, and an excellent location just a short walk from Pike Place Market and the waterfront. The staff was friendly and welcoming, and the atmosphere felt both upscale and relaxed. I also enjoyed the cozy ambiance at Pennyroyal. If you’re looking for a trendy downtown Seattle hotel with character and convenience, the Kimpton Palladian is definitely worth considering."

"Good stuff: + the location is great—just a half mile from Pike Place Market, and less than a mile in the other direction from the Space Needle. Plenty of restaurants, cafes, and shops to explore within a very short walking distance. + the motif is kind of dark and brooding but also really fun (the throw pillow in my room had a picture of Ricky Gervais dressed as a soldier, and a second glance at the large oil painting in the hallway confirms that it’s Kurt Cobain). +room was quite clean, bed was very comfortable +the attached bar, PennyRoyal, is excellent —great drinks, friendly service, reasonably quiet. Happy hour deals are very solid + the attached restaurant, Shaker + Spear, has a very solid breakfast and good service. Service can be slow since there was only one person cooking for the entire restaurant during both breakfast services. The bad: + the location can be quite loud— a lot of ambient noise, sirens, people yelling on the street. The hotel includes a pair of ear plugs in your room. I also used a white noise maker, which helped. + the elevator went out of service my first evening there. Huge bummer to walk up to the 9th floor after a few cocktails. However, one of the two elevators was operational by the time I needed to use it the next morning. I was told that I would receive a drink voucher, but that never happened and I never saw the employee (manager?) who offered it again. + I booked with a rewards credit card, with a “guaranteed” 4pm late check out. By contrast, I also have an early check in benefit that is explicitly “subject to availability.” I asked about this multiple times during my stay, and when I asked for the 3rd time the morning of my departure, I was told that “late checkout requests are always subject to availability” which is very much not a “guarantee” and explicitly not how the benefit is outlined. The hotel stated that it was “able” to accommodate a 2pm checkout, which is what I accepted but it was also a pretty big inconvenience since it was a work trip and I scheduled my evening flight with the “guarantee” in mind. Overall, it’s a good hotel. I wouldn’t book if you’re explicitly looking for a quiet night’s sleep or if your travel plans require you to leave in the evening."
