PB hotel design editorial

Cantilevered over First Avenue where Seattle's Pike Place Market district meets the waterfront bluff, the glass curtain wall tower designed by Olson Kundig — the city's most architecturally fluent practice — gave Thompson Seattle a distinct civic ambition when it opened in 2016. The eleven-storey building's faceted glazing catches the grey Pacific light differently at every hour, its dark steel framing articulating the corner site with the kind of structural confidence that most hotel commissions avoid. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the 158 rooms are less a design gesture than a practical reckoning with the view: Elliott Bay, the Olympic Mountains, and the container port spread below in a panorama that makes the interior palette feel deliberately restrained by comparison. Ana Bryan led the interiors, grounding the rooms in warm walnut, navy leather headboards, and marble side tables — a calm register that keeps attention directed outward toward the water. A rotating commission of Pacific Northwest artwork, including the graphite hair studies visible throughout the guest floors, anchors the spaces without competing with the scenery. The ground-floor restaurant, with its exposed concrete columns, brass sputnik pendants, and open kitchen framed in dark herringbone tile, shifts the mood toward something more urban and deliberate. Higher up, the rooftop bar opens through folding glass walls onto the harbor view, tufted leather Chesterfields and worn wood chairs arranged with the studied informality of a very well-edited private club.

"We will only stay at The Thompson Seattle when we come into town. Not only for the hotel, but the staff makes this hotel top tier. Not only does all staff make you feel welcomed, they make you feel like it’s a second home. Right when you get to the steps, you’re greeted warmly from the front of the house team. Valet team is wonderful & so helpful. After opening those front doors you’re welcomed by guest services/concierge staff. They are also incredibly kind. I have never once had a “meh” experience with any staff member up front. Leah, is one of the reasons why we keep coming back and share so many milestones and special memories with The Thompson. I mean, from an engagement, to baby moon, our son’s first hotel stay, to much more. She goes above and beyond, always is so informative about what’s going on for the duration we are visiting, and just makes the stay better. Thank you Thompson team, without you guys, we wouldn’t have had so many great memories!"

"Professional and attentive staff throughout my stay which always the case when I’m at the Thompson. The restaurant has a wonderful range of entrees with some local flare included. Can’t wait to get back into Seattle for business so I can stay at the Thompson."

"I stayed at this hotel before and remember that I said I wouldn’t stay again. From the outside and the lobby it seems like a really cool Thompson. The staff and check-in and staff at the desk are very helpful. It’s an intimate space. They even helped me get a room that had a lounge chair so I didn’t have to sit in the bed or a desk chair all the time. They have the full keyless check-in that works with your iPhone. But the rooms are substandard with dated decor. There is a noisy air-conditioning unit in every room; the kind you put on a wall in an apartment. Some of the rooms have shears and some curtains and some both. So either you’re exposed to the bums on first street or your room is dark with the curtains drawn. The lighting is very awkward. Some parts are completely dark. Some parts have three lights, and any color temperature goes and no dimming. Traveling with my own hue dimmable Bluetooth bulbs has been a lifesaver. The TV and refrigerator worked. There was hot water, but the plumbing made funny noises after use. A weird thing happened when I went to the restaurant to have a quick snack and drink and bring it up to my room. It was happy hour, so I was offered a smaller menu which I picked from. I was going to bring it to my room, but then I was told that happy hour had to be eaten in the restaurant. The only other person sitting next to me at the bar said “wow you’re really strict with your happy hour.” This is a Cat 5 property. Don’t play games."
