PB hotel design editorial

Fourth and Seneca in downtown Seattle is not the most obvious address for a hotel that built its reputation on nightlife energy and sensory overload, yet the limestone-clad tower that houses W Seattle has anchored the brand's Pacific Northwest presence since 1999, when Starwood chose the city as one of its earliest W outposts. The building itself carries the restrained commercial classicism of mid-century Seattle office architecture, its stone facade and arched entry canopy providing an unlikely container for what unfolds inside. The contrast between exterior and interior is the point. The Living Room lobby, visible in the images, commits fully to W's signature atmosphere: a faceted metallic wall installation catching programmed color washes in teal and violet, a cylindrical glass fireplace anchoring a low-slung seating landscape of sectional sofas and steel-framed ottomans, neon linear cabling scoring the ceiling overhead. Guest rooms across the property's 424 keys take a warmer register — sculptural headboards clad in staggered cedar planks reference the Pacific Northwest's timber culture, charcoal geometric carpets map the street grid below, and teal accent cushions tie the palette back to Puget Sound. The dining level introduces mirror-ball pendants and dark fluted columns alongside pop-art murals, shifting the mood toward casual energy. It is a hotel that wears its era — the late-nineties conviction that luxury could be loud, tactile, and unapologetically urban — without embarrassment.

"The W used to feel luxurious before, now my stay felt like a cheap motel room - no robe, no slippers, no makeup mirror, no bottled water in the gym, vinyl wallpaper, old outdated tubs, no soundproofing. My room had the most terrible view - of the garage - and backed up to the elevator shaft. The grinding was so frustrating that neither my sound machine nor ear plugs were effective. When I called the front desk I was told that all the rooms surround the elevator and there’s nothing that can be done. After a fitful night of terrible sleep I saw that in fact half the rooms faced the other side and did not back up to the elevator. When I inquired at the front desk around 7:30am in the morning, the woman said they had plenty of open rooms and it shouldn’t be a problem but she wasn’t going to move me. In the evening after I returned to find my room never serviced by housekeeping, I had to persuade the new front desk person to move me. I was told that only one room was available - a double. Overall, this experience left a bad taste in my mouth. Also - no self parking and a $90 valet is egregious"

"Walked over to visit the W’s hotel bar and stumbled upon what seemed like a birthday party bash upfront. There were no signs indicating the party was private so I ordered two drinks for a friend and myself. I closed the tab immediately. “Large party gratuity” was added onto the check. Apparently it was assumed we were there for the birthday party? Mind you, this is a hotel bar, not a restaurant. Shady business practice. Never again."

"After picking my car up from the $75 a night valet we noticed a dent and scratch on a brand new car. After 1 month of poor communication they decided to not pay for the damage. The manager at the W stated they have nothing to do with the parking."

"We stayed 2 night over new year eve and also celebrated our daughter's birthday. The number 1 positive is hospitality! Tania our receptionist was friendly, the café stagg were very accommodating making our breakfast experience great. Finally Ian made our stay wonderful by going above and beyond to prepare the room to celebrate our daughter's birthday. Prepared balloons, cupcakes and mini donuts that surprised our daughter. The best bit was a signed card from the staffs, it really made it special. It was a really wonderful stay mainly due to the staff. Affitionally the location was great, central to downtown activities. Trace market food had a Hawaiin twist which was really good and creative like a home made spam."
