PB hotel design editorial

Isay Weinfeld's board-formed concrete monolith rising from the rocky scrubland of La Barra is among the most architecturally serious gestures in South American hospitality. The São Paulo architect, whose work consistently refuses the theatrical in favour of the tectonic, gave Fasano Punta del Este its essential character: a striated concrete volume cantilevered over a granite outcrop, floor-to-ceiling glass exposing an interior lap pool to the Uruguayan countryside as if the building had simply claimed the landscape rather than been placed upon it. The effect is closer to a private house than a resort — deliberate, compressed, and entirely without ornamentation. Rohm Fasano's interiors follow the same instinct, layering warmth into the austerity through dark-stained timber wall panelling, sheepskin rugs over striped kilims, and loose slipcovered sofas in warm cream. Rooms open directly to the rolling estancia grasslands through wide sliding frames, the horizon arriving unfiltered at the bed. The rooftop restaurant — shaded by a canopy of lashed timber poles and woven reed, furnished with wire café chairs and long communal tables in weathered wood — reads the Uruguayan gaucho tradition without sentimentalising it. On the grounds below, a converted wooden railway wagon on its original iron wheels serves as a curiosity and lounge, teak deck furniture arranged around it facing the polo fields. The whole property carries the feeling of a working estancia that happens to have been conceived by one of Latin America's finest architects.

About

The Fasano group’s international expansion begins in Punta del Este, with the hotel Fasano Punta del Este in one of the most extraordinary locations in Uruguay. The Fasano family brings its century old tradition in fine cuisine and in the art of serving to its new development in Punta del Este, one of the most elegant coastal towns in South America. Located in La Barra, the hotel Fasano Punta del Este was projected on an area overlooking the Maldonado River, with breathtaking views and surrounded by exuberant nature where you can enjoy one of the most spectacular sunsets of the Uruguayan coast. Architecture and interiors designed by Isay Weinfeld, also responsible for the hotel Fasano São Paulo, the project rescues the elegance of this countryside property once owned by the traditional Braun family.

Fasano Punta del Este Reviews

"The hotel is set within a vast estate, approximately 20 minutes from Punta. The rooms are spacious and very well equipped (coffee machine, minibar, glassware, Bluetooth sound system, etc.), featuring a large bed and exceptional bedding. The scenery is stunning, with beautiful sunsets enjoyed both from the bar and the outdoor pool. The property offers tennis courts, a spa, an excellent gym with Technogym equipment, an indoor pool, a soccer field, and a golf driving range. A special highlight is the availability of golf carts for guests, making it easy to move around the expansive property. The staff is consistently attentive and friendly. This is not a drawback, just a consideration: the hotel is located away from Punta’s city center and the beach. The restaurant is a Fasano; however, the execution of the dishes is slightly below that of other restaurants in the group. The terrace bar could indeed offer a broader selection of food options (currently limited to snacks, pizzas, and paninis) and perhaps a wider range of seafood dishes. One of the best hotels I have ever stayed at—worth every penny! I would definitely return."

"Beautiful property with great amenities, but a few misses. The equestrian center is a real highlight, and we loved the pool area and the pool restaurant/bar—great vibe and service. That said, we were surprised by the hotel transfer pricing: an evening ride to Punta del Este was $78 each way, which feels very high compared to local options (Uber is often closer to $30). For longer stays, breakfast (and lunch) could use more variety, and mosquitos were an issue on a few days, which made the outdoor areas less enjoyable."
