PB hotel design editorial

Tucked into a sheltered bay on Antigua's west coast, where a steep jungle hillside drops almost directly to a crescent of white sand, Hermitage Bay was conceived around a single organizing principle: that the landscape should remain dominant and the architecture should dissolve into it. The forty-or-so thatched cottages and hillside villas are arranged in two loose bands — beach-level suites stepping back from the shoreline under coconut palms, and hillside units climbing the forested slope above, their dark thatched roofs barely distinguishable from the canopy at distance. Inside, the design language is consistent and deliberately unhurried — teak platform beds hung with gauze mosquito nets suspended from pitched timber ceilings, woven rattan wall panels, louvered shutters, and sisal underfoot. The palette runs to warm honey, white linen, and a recurring wash of celadon green that echoes the surrounding water. Ceiling fans in the larger hillside villas turn above exposed dark timber rafters, while sliding glass doors open directly onto private decks fitted with hanging chairs and plunge pools framed by vegetation. The beachfront restaurant extends across a hardwood deck where round-backed teak armchairs gather around linen-clothed tables, the hedge line kept low enough to hold the sea view. The pool terrace, sheltered by a grove of royal palms, keeps the same material register — teak loungers, timber-framed planters, white canvas umbrellas — the whole property maintaining a quiet coherence that has made it one of the Caribbean's more quietly assured private retreats.

"Overall exceptional experience. Relaxing vibe and luxury without the pretentiousness. Thoroughly enjoyed the upper level hillside ocean pool room. Some minor service missteps, but nothing that detracted from the experience. Great value through Hilton FNC redemptions."

"I felt like I just didn’t get Hermitage Bay. The hotel team are wonderful and the public areas are beautifully laid out but our room was underwhelming and very strange. The floors now have a natural coir style carpet running through the living area, bedroom and into the whole bathroom. This was badly marked in the lounge area and the bathroom. The strangest thing is the bathroom being open plan to the bedroom/living area. There is no glass or dividing door separating the toilet from the bedroom. I am exceptionally comfortable around my husband but no one wants to be relaxing in the same room as someone using the toilet! Coordination is needed if you want any privacy. We were staying on a bed and breakfast basis and even after lovely long lunches (La Petite Maison was wonderful), cocktails, wine and dinner, we didn’t get anywhere close to the all inclusive rate so I’m surprised anyone would choose this as an option. We had a morning flight on our last day which meant leaving the hotel at 7am. We asked if we could pre-order a picnic breakfast, or have room service breakfast before we left, or pick up some fruit and pastries but were advised breakfast started at 7.30am with muffins and coffee at the bar area from 7am but nothing else could be done. All with a smile but no solution was offered. Maybe Hermitage Bay just wasn’t for us."

"We were here three years ago, it was great; this time it was exceptional. Subtle but wonderful upgrades. Meticulous maintenance and super service. I’m hesitant to be too glowing because I am not sure I want the whole world to find this amazing hideaway. Waba’s incredible tour of the natural beauty of the landscape was memorable, he’s a keeper! Simone and Zoe were service standouts."

"This is an absolutely luxurious place to stay. The attentive staff ensures a peaceful and comfortable experience. The rooms are adorned with fresh flowers, a welcome fruit plate, and prosecco. Airport pick-up service. Live music is played at the beach club and in the evening at the bar. The beach is gorgeous, with a sandy shore and a few spots of cute shells. The food in all the restaurants is delicious."

"Everything about my experience at Hermitage Bay was wonderful. From the pre-trip excursion-booking with Solange, to the welcome from Shawna, to the drinks from Simone and Stoney (sp?), every detail was considered, kind and welcoming. My beachfront villa was immaculate and the property is breathtaking, but what makes Hermitage so special is the people who work there. They help ensure your stay is exactly how you envisioned it - and then some! I don’t often visit places more than once, as there is so much world to see, but I know I’ll be back to Hermitage as it now holds a special place in my heart. Thanks for the great holiday!"
