PB hotel design editorial

Facing the Perfume River on Hue's Le Loi boulevard, a white Art Deco villa that served as the residence of the French colonial governor of Annam carries its history with unusual grace. Built in 1932, the structure's symmetrical facade — curved balconies, porthole-like decorative roundels, layered cornice lines illuminated at dusk against a deep blue sky — establishes Azerai La Residence Hue as one of the finest surviving examples of French Indochina architecture in Vietnam. Adrian Zecha's Azerai group undertook a meticulous restoration, expanding the property to 122 rooms and villas across the landscaped riverside grounds while preserving the original building's proportions and colonial detailing. Inside, the design maintains a careful conversation between historical fabric and contemporary comfort. Heritage rooms in the original villa retain their high ceilings, original teal encaustic floor tiles, gridded French windows, and slowly turning ceiling fans — details that ground the space firmly in its period — while Art Deco-inspired bronzed metal beds and circular disc wall sconces add considered modern furniture without disturbing the atmosphere. The bar, lined with herringbone parquet, terracotta velvet armchairs, and a backlit cabinet displaying blue-and-white Vietnamese ceramics, achieves the feel of a well-preserved colonial salon rather than a stage set. Newer wing rooms trade period charm for dark timber floors and wide balconies with river views, the two registers sitting comfortably within grounds where royal palms frame a broad outdoor pool at the river's edge.

About

Set on a two and a half-hectare site with 200 metres of frontage on the fabled Perfume River, Azerai La Residence, Hue has 122 rooms & suites. The colonial mansion at the heart of the resort was built in 1930s as part of the residence of the French Resident Superieure. The mansion’s distinctive façade, its long horizonal lines and nautical flourishes are hallmark of the streamline moderne school of art deco architecture. Its two complementary wings, built in 2005, are contemporary in design yet echo elements of art deco aesthetics and embrace an expansive tropical garden and salt-water swimming pool.

"This was our second stay at Azerai La Residence Hue, and returning felt like coming home to somewhere truly special. From the moment we arrived, we were reminded why we fell in love with this hotel the first time. Everything about this place is exceptional. The service is simply outstanding - warm, genuine, attentive and always delivered with a smile. Every member of the team makes you feel sincerely welcome and valued. A special thanks to Mrs. Yen Tran. The hotel itself is breathtaking. The architecture, the fascinating history of the building, the elegant Art Deco design, and the peaceful atmosphere create a truly unique experience. There is a wonderful sense of calm and positive energy throughout the property. Dining at Le Parfum, the hotel's restaurant, was a highlight of our stay. Every meal was absolutely delicious, beautifully presented, and prepared with remarkable attention to detail. Breakfast, lunch and dinner were consistently outstanding. Thank you for amazing service waitress Hieu. The gardens are lush, beautifully maintained, and filled with magnificent tropical plants. The swimming pool is stunning, the fitness centre is spacious and well equipped, and the spa provides the perfect place to relax and recharge. The location is ideal, overlooking the beautiful Perfume River and just across from Hue's historic old quarter, making it easy to explore this charming city. During our visit we also experienced the hotel's newly opened restaurant, Le Cercle. It was an experience in itself and deserves a review of its own - which I will gladly write separately. Hue is one of Vietnam's most beautiful cities, rich in history, culture and charm. We are so happy to be back, and staying once again at Azerai La Residence made this visit unforgettable. Azerai La Residence Hue is much more than a luxury hotel—it is a destination in itself. We cannot recommend it highly enough and are already looking forward to our third visit."

"I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel for a total of four nights (three plus one). It exceeded my already high expectations. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I used the concierge service to help me organize transportation (the drivers were great), tours (I especially enjoyed the food tour), and much more. The pool, the gym and the bar were also great."

"They knew our name before we said a word We hadn’t even reached the front desk when the staff at Azerai La Résidence recognized our family by name. That moment set the tone for everything that followed. This is a hotel where hospitality isn’t a policy, it’s a genuine way of being. The warmth never let up. Staff checked in on us daily, remembered our preferences, and anticipated our needs before we voiced them. A complimentary massage was a wonderful surprise a gracious gesture that felt perfectly in keeping with the spirit of the place. Add a stunning location, a beautifully appointed and deeply comfortable property, and a breakfast spread that delighted every morning, and you have one of those rare stays you find yourself talking about long after you’re home. Azerai La Résidence doesn’t just meet expectations it quietly, gracefully exceeds them."

"Wow! What a magnificent hotel. This hotel is one of the, if not THE most beautiful hotel I have had the pleasure of staying at during a five day visit to Hue. From beginning to end, the staff are what made this holiday so wonderful. The kindness, friendliness and humility of each member of this well oiled team was what made us feel so welcome. Their hospitality each evening as we enjoyed a pre dinner drink in the bar or each morning as we sat for breakfast could not have been better. Food and drinks are outstanding with a huge selection to choose from, across all meals. Do not miss the Vietnamese pho for breakfast, with flavour stacked beef or chicken stock as base ready for you to add the freshest of ingredients, chill and herbs. We had a great lot of fun with the tour desk staff member, who was so knowledgeable and efficient - A pure delight!!! Don't miss time by the pool, a massage on site (amazing) and a back street food tour which you can locate easily from either concierge or through the tour desk or via your own means. It was a wonderful stay and I would love to return one day. An additional shout out to the front door gentlemen who greeted us with a smile each day and evening, front desk staff who were SO welcoming, the wait staff, bar staff who can mix a very fine drink, housekeeping, gardeners and the spa angels. EVERYONE!"
