PB hotel design editorial

Perched at nearly 1,600 metres in the Hoang Lien Son mountains of northern Vietnam, where colonial-era hill station architecture once defined the French relationship with Indochina's highlands, Hotel de la Coupole - MGallery conjures that vanished world with considerable theatrical ambition. The building's ochre and cream facade rises in a layered Beaux-Arts confection above the mist-wrapped ridges of Sa Pa, its green mansard rooflines and crowning dark dome visible from much of the town — a deliberate echo of the grand resort hotels the French Indochina administration built here in the early twentieth century before wartime erased most of them. Opened in 2019 and comprising 249 rooms across multiple floors, the property was designed with interiors conceived around the idea of the costume — each guest room assigned its own chromatic identity, from deep lacquer red with button-tufted velvet headboards and fringed lampshades to jewel-box emerald with patterned tile floors and dressmaker's mannequins deployed as art objects. The restaurant, housed beneath a soaring double-height rotunda with arched steel-framed windows and white plasterwork columns, fills with natural highland light that softens the room's crimsons and rattan-backed high chairs into something closer to a Colonial-era conservatory than a hotel dining room. The indoor pool carries the same sensibility — green marble mosaic columns reflected in still water, red-shaded chandeliers hanging overhead in a composition that borrows equally from European thermal baths and Vietnamese festival colour. The effect throughout is unapologetically maximalist, a property that wears its historical fantasy with genuine commitment.

"I was very much looking forward to this stay, as I really admire the work of Bill Bensley, the architect who designed la Coupole. The design is an interesting combination of styles, and somewhat whimsical, though admittedly, to me, it felt totally out of place in Sapa, with a boldness that dominates the profile of the town in a way that feels overdone. I found the staff absolutely lovely and have no clue why some reviewers remarked to the contrary, That said, aside from the delightful staff, I found the experience disappointing and frustrating, and I regret the decision to stay. The hotel is constantly descended upon by instagramers, totally inconsiderate of others, using public spaces as private for unrelenting selfies and photo-shoots. People prancing down corridors and terraces repeatedly for the perfect shot and, at times, we found ourselves having to navigate around cameras set on tripods. Honestly, it’s a circus and we observed no attempt by management to curtail the behavior. One could not even find peace in the bar, which despite having a sign that children are not permitted after 6pm “to preserve ambience and tradition”, seemed to have children running about every time we hoped to relax with an after dinner cocktail (even while members of the management team were present). And if anyone actually did want to preserve ambience, they would learn how to properly adjust lighting to highlight the interior design and avoid the bar venue feeling like a floodlit ball court. Like the hotel, I found the guest room to be unique in design, but definitely an example of form over function (dark, a single hook for towels and robes, etc). Do yourself a favor and spare yourself - stay in one of the quiet eco lodges in the hills (a totally classic Sapa experience) and view photos and videos of la Coupole online - you won’t have to look very far; they’re are a lot of them!"

"Right in the heart of Sa Pa, this is an exceptional property. From arrival to departure everything is meticulously well catered for. All the staff are friendly and helpful, the room I stayed in was awesome and the decor of the hotel is simply stunning"

"This is the most comfortable and luxurious hotel I’ve ever stayed in. It was so sumptuous, I felt like I was a member of the Rolling Stones. My only regret is that we only had one night in Sa Pa. This is a hotel worth a trip to Vietnam for the hotel alone. The rooms are beautifully appointed, and we only stayed in a standard room. The facilities, décor, and restaurant are all first class, and the indoor pool has to be seen to be believed. The staff were also terrific: patient, attentive, knowledgeable, and more than happy to help. We arrived in Sa Pa early in the morning on an overnight train and, fortunately for us, they were able to expedite access to our room much earlier than we expected. Our entire stay, although brief, was nothing short of amazing. It was truly a memorable experience."

"It has been a truly wonderful stay at Hotel de la Coupole – MGallery. The architecture and overall layout of the hotel are absolutely stunning — theatrical, enchanting, and full of character. Even the hotel rooms feel beautifully curated and immersive, making the entire experience feel luxurious yet artistic. The breakfast spread was excellent, with a wide variety of food prepared beautifully. Kudos to the chefs and kitchen team for the quality and variety offered every morning. What made the stay even more memorable was the consistently excellent service from everyone in the hotel — from the door staff helping with luggage, to the breakfast restaurant team, all of whom were warm, attentive, and welcoming throughout the stay. A very special mention goes to Thạnh at the reception, who has been exceptionally helpful and attentive. I was genuinely impressed that she recognised me by face and even remembered my room, which reflects a very high level of hospitality and genuine care for guests. One incident especially reflected the honesty and professionalism of the team. We accidentally dropped our wallet, and the hotel staff managed to retrieve it through their CCTV system, recognised us on camera, and promptly returned it to us safely. We are deeply grateful for the integrity, effort, and care shown by the staff throughout the process. Overall, a very memorable, charming, and delightful stay. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Sapa."

"Excellent hotel- very artistic decor-every nook and corner of the hotel has been tastefully done. The room is very pretty. Comfortable bed. Very hospitable staff- warm and welcoming. The restaurant is exotic - food is tasty and varied. The location is just perfect - all the major attractions are just around the place - walking distance - especially the monorail station has a special entrance specially for the hotel guests - as it is just behind the hotel. Special mention to the concierge staff member 'My' - she was very sweet and helpful. It's a beautiful property and we enjoyed the stay immensely. I'll recommend it to everyone."
