PB hotel design editorial

Lam Son Square, where the old French colonial quarter of Ho Chi Minh City reaches its most composed and ceremonial, provided the address for Park Hyatt Saigon when it opened in 2005 — a purpose-built property whose architects conceived a cream-rendered facade in the French Indochine manner, complete with louvered shutters, articulated cornices, and a stepped roofline crowned by a dark dome that places the building in deliberate conversation with the nearby Opera House. The nine-storey structure wraps around a courtyard garden and pool terrace that, lit at dusk, carries the atmosphere of a colonial-era city club translated into something more generous and hotel-scaled. The 245 rooms draw their character from a palette of warm champagne wallcovering, hand-tufted floral wool carpets in gold and sage, and dark-stained mahogany beds with tufted cream headboards — furniture that evokes French provincial cabinetry filtered through a tropical sensibility, ceiling fans completing the period register without irony. Louvered French doors in the terrace-facing rooms open onto private balconies screened by mature frangipani. The restaurant interiors, refreshed in a more recent intervention, introduced a lighter Scandinavian-influenced vocabulary — oak tables, plaid-upholstered dining chairs, rattan bentwood seating — that sits against the original white-painted colonnade and floor-to-ceiling louvred glass walls, pulling the lush courtyard garden into the dining room's sightlines with considerable ease.

"An amazing hotel. From the time of check in where the lady at the check-in counter asked me if I would like to be escorted to my room, to checking out, it was a very pleasant experience. I would stay here again for sure."

"This hotel is wonderful. My husband communicated with them prior to our trip and they took care of everything we asked. Since we had a 16 hour flight from SFO we paid for an additional night so we could get our room at 5 AM. We arrived and were whisked to our wonderful suite where we slept and showered before beginning our day. We booked our private tours through the hotel and they were perfect. Guides were very professional and knowledgeable. We had a driver and a guide in a comfortable Mercedes. We saw all the great sights in Ho Chi Minh City. Breakfast in Opera was very good. We chose the menu instead of the buffet and had great waffles and oatmeal as well as great fruit selections from the buffet. Breakfast was included so you could do both. Coffee drinks were expertly crafted each morning with many choices. We did have a little language communication issue, but the managers helped and the staff was very nice and efficient accommodating all our requests. We sat by the pool one afternoon and it is nicely kept and the grounds were very nice. Our suite was beautiful and kept clean and organized. I thought I detected a slight musty odor; they quickly brought an air purifier and that took care of it. Also, pillow and bedding requests were ready when we arrived. The closet was a good size for people staying as long as we did. Bathroom amenities were plentiful and restocked daily., as well as bottled water and fresh fruit. Someone mentioned the towels, they truly are very large. And yes, a Dyson hairdryer. I am definitely buying one of those, so light and powerful. We had a powder room as well which was great for a long stay. We loved everything about this hotel. It is beautiful and everyone we encountered was genuinely helpful and appreciative of our business. Make sure to look at the lovely art throughout the hotel. I will review Opera for lunch and dinner separately. We went to visit other hotels to look around and that convinced us the Park Hyatt is the place to stay."
