PB hotel design editorial

A white-rendered Georgian manor set within twenty-six acres of Pembrokeshire woodland, framed by mature oaks and a cropped lawn where a single abstract sculpture catches the evening light — this is the quiet confidence that the Grove of Narberth has made its signature since the Evans family transformed the property into a hotel in 2007. The house itself dates to the early nineteenth century, its three-storey facade of paired sash windows and slate mansard roof carrying the composed symmetry of a well-kept Welsh gentry seat rather than anything that announces itself as hospitality. Inside, the approach is closer to a curated private house than a conventional country hotel. Bedrooms are furnished with lacquered four-poster frames — some in burnt orange, others in blackened iron draped with saffron linen — set against sisal runners, antique Windsor chairs, drop-leaf tables in figured walnut, and painted copper pitchers on windowsills. The restaurant draws on the same botanical sensibility: fern-printed wallpaper wrapping a room of dark-stained timber ceilings, candlelit tables on seagrass matting, and a massive glazed vessel of live ferns anchoring the fireplace. In the bar, amber-painted walls hung with black-and-white landscape photographs, ebonised tongue-and-groove panelling, and low globe lamps on low tables give the room the atmosphere of a shooting lodge that has quietly absorbed a decade of considered additions. A resident dog, apparently, completes the picture.

"Stunning hotel. Beautiful decor and devine food. We had a last minute quick one night away. Having stayed before we asked for a specific room but sadly on arrival we were given a different one. It was still very beautifully appointed but the bathroom was very narrow and felt cramped. We are tall and hit our heads several times! That aside we love this hotel. We had the tasting menu which was unusual and spectacular. The flight of wines were all very different, we felt some worked others did not but they were all interesting and nice to try something new. The sommelier was enthusiastic and entertaining, we really thought she brought something special to our dining experience We slept well and love all the goodies in the fridge The leaving pack is a sweet gesture and nice touch. We’ve already recommended The Grove to several friends and we will definitely stay again"

"Just returned from a wonderful three-night dinner, bed & breakfast stay at The Grove in Narberth, and it exceeded every expectation. From arrival, the service was warm and welcoming - including a lovely free coffee and homemade cookie, a really thoughtful touch after the journey. The hotel is beautifully set in the Pembrokeshire countryside: peaceful, elegant and incredibly relaxing. We had booked a Classic Room but were kindly upgraded to a Meadow Loft Room, which was absolutely fantastic - spacious, beautifully designed and very comfortable. A real highlight was the in-room fridge stocked with complimentary drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), plus fresh milk for the coffee machine and bottled water - a rare and brilliant touch in the UK. Dinner as part of the package was excellent, with beautifully prepared dishes using outstanding local produce, and breakfasts were equally impressive with plenty of choice and quality ingredients. They also provided a completely personalised menu for me, carefully adapted to my dietary requirements - absolutely extraordinary care and attention to detail. On the second night we upgraded to dine in The Fernery, the four AA Rosette restaurant, and it was one of the best dining experiences we’ve ever had. The five-course tasting menu felt closer to seven with all the thoughtful extras, and every course was exceptional. The walled garden was also a highlight - stunning and full of produce used directly in the kitchen, a joy to walk around. And finally, possibly the best and most original breakfast menu we’ve ever seen - genuinely refreshing ideas. Even on checkout the thoughtful touches continued, as we were given a bag with bottled water and Welsh cakes for the journey home - such a lovely ending to an exceptional stay. The grounds are stunning and the location ideal for exploring Pembrokeshire before returning to a calm, luxurious base. A huge thank you to all the staff - we left feeling completely refreshed and will definitely return. What a fabulous place!"

"We had a lovely weekend; everyone was so friendly and helpful. I can recommend staying for 2 nights, do some coastal walks and enjoy the tasting menu. This country house has been beautifully decorated and sits in an idyllic spot. Possibly the nicest hotel in Britain?"

"The Grove is in a stunning, quiet location, tucked away in the countryside. Perfect place to unwind and enjoy the delicious food and wine. Delightful friendly staff who looked after us brilliantly both in the restaurant and in general. Spacious bedroom with wonderful bath products and the fluffiest white bath towels! All spotless. Certainly warrants being a luxury hotel with all that it offers. The atmosphere is calm and one can easily relax in any of the beautifully decorated rooms."
