PB hotel design editorial

A white-rendered Georgian manor set within twenty-six acres of Pembrokeshire woodland, framed by mature oaks and a cropped lawn where a single abstract sculpture catches the evening light — this is the quiet confidence that the Grove of Narberth has made its signature since the Evans family transformed the property into a hotel in 2007. The house itself dates to the early nineteenth century, its three-storey facade of paired sash windows and slate mansard roof carrying the composed symmetry of a well-kept Welsh gentry seat rather than anything that announces itself as hospitality. Inside, the approach is closer to a curated private house than a conventional country hotel. Bedrooms are furnished with lacquered four-poster frames — some in burnt orange, others in blackened iron draped with saffron linen — set against sisal runners, antique Windsor chairs, drop-leaf tables in figured walnut, and painted copper pitchers on windowsills. The restaurant draws on the same botanical sensibility: fern-printed wallpaper wrapping a room of dark-stained timber ceilings, candlelit tables on seagrass matting, and a massive glazed vessel of live ferns anchoring the fireplace. In the bar, amber-painted walls hung with black-and-white landscape photographs, ebonised tongue-and-groove panelling, and low globe lamps on low tables give the room the atmosphere of a shooting lodge that has quietly absorbed a decade of considered additions. A resident dog, apparently, completes the picture.

"Had an absolutely fantastic stay here for my boyfriends 40th birthday at the beginning of March. The hotel is beautifully decorated and feels relaxed despite being very oppulant and grand. All the staff we encountered were so helpful and friendly and make our stay very special. The room was exquisite and really took our breath away...we didn't want to leave. As it was a special occasion we were provided with extras which was a total surprise and greatly appreciated. It made the stay extra special. We had a taster menu booked in The Fernery and this was mind blowing. Every dish was full of flavour and felt like they had been prepared with love. The waiting staff were all wonderful and took the time to explain each dish and what ingredients had been used. Fabulous eating experience. From the time we checked in to the time we checked out we were made to feel very welcome. We loved everything about out stay. It'll be almost impossible to beat as an overall experience. Thank you to everyone who made our stay so memorable. We are so grateful for everything that was done for us. We haven't stopped talking about our stay with you."

"The Bald and I recently ventured out to celebrate one of those milestone birthdays — the sort that sit just before a particularly offensive zero. It felt only right to mark the occasion somewhere suitably special, and The Grove of Narberth did not disappoint. Approaching down a dark country lane (the kind that makes you briefly question your life choices), we were met with the warm glow of a place that instantly reassures you — yes, this was the right decision. Even under the cover of night, the grounds looked stunning — beautifully lit, elegant, and quietly confident. In daylight, I imagine it’s even more impressive, but it had already done enough to win us over. From the moment we arrived, the staff struck that rare and perfect balance — attentive without hovering, present without performing. No unnecessary theatrics, just calm, professional service that lets the place speak for itself. And speak it did. The food was superb. The Bald started with sea bream — delicately prepared and beautifully presented — while I opted for lamb that was as pleasing to the eye as it was to the palate. Each dish arrived like a small work of art: elegant, thoughtful, and utterly inviting. Thankfully, the flavour more than lived up to the promise. For mains, we swapped things around — I chose fish, and The Bald went for a venison steamed pudding that sounded indulgent and absolutely delivered. We skipped sides entirely, and quite rightly so — the portions were perfectly judged, proving that when everything on the plate earns its place, nothing extra is needed. Every mouthful was spot on. Dessert, naturally, was essential. A mousse for immediate gratification and a ginger gâteau that, quite sensibly, came home with us — a gift to our future selves (a decision we fully endorse). All told, it was a genuinely lovely evening. With a Travelzoo voucher bringing the experience in at £75, plus a £12.50 service charge, it felt like excellent value for something that leans firmly into the “treat yourself” category. Yes, a £9 beer raised an eyebrow, but it didn’t detract from what was a thoroughly enjoyable, slightly indulgent experience. If you’re looking for somewhere a little bit special — without any of the stiffness that can sometimes come with it — The Grove delivers in spades. A beautiful setting, exceptional food, and service that gets it just right. We’ll be back… hopefully before the next offensive zero."

"I wanted to treat my husband for Valentine’s Day, so booked the Grove for a 7 course meal in the Fernery and a room for the night. The room was fantastic, beautifully decorated with a lovely bathroom ~ both in period style sympathetic of the age of the hotel. We had complimentary wine, teas and coffees and cake in the room. The toiletries were absolutely beautiful, including the bath salts which I indulged in, after our meal. And before bed while we were out at dinner, our bed was turned down. This is a first for us in any hotel, and a lovely touch. The meal was absolutely incredible, the attention to detail the flavours and presentation were all out of this world and the wine pairing was the best of any wine pairing we have experienced. Finished off with petit fours in the drawing room with the fire on. To end our stay we had a fabulous breakfast. Thank you to the whole team who made our stay so special 🥂"
