PB hotel design editorial

When the British South Africa Company commissioned a grand railway hotel beside the world's largest waterfall in 1904, they were encoding an entire imperial worldview in terracotta roof tiles and cream-rendered colonnades. The Victoria Falls Hotel, completed in its current Edwardian form by 1905 and extended significantly through the 1930s, was designed to make the journey to Mosi-oa-Tunya — the Smoke that Thunders — feel like an occasion worthy of the destination. The two-storey facade, visible across immaculate lawns shaded by mature indigenous trees, presents that original confidence intact: a deep colonnaded veranda running the full width of the building, red-tiled hipped roofs, and the particular pale yellow of colonial plasterwork catching the late-afternoon Zambezi light. Inside, the property holds two distinct registers. The formal dining room retains its coffered plaster ceiling, brass chandeliers with red shades, a resident grand piano, and decorative ironwork screens worked into stylised palm fronds — a room that could seat a colonial governor without adjustment. Against this, the renovated guest rooms introduce a more contemporary hand: linen-upholstered headboards with integrated lighting, monochrome geometric rugs, and framed antique engravings of the Falls arranged as a considered frieze above the bed. The heritage suites preserve four-poster beds dressed in white mosquito nets, stripped timber floors, and ikat-print curtains in celadon — accommodations that honour the building's age without requiring guests to perform nostalgia in order to sleep comfortably.

"We did not stay at the hotel, however came past to see the view and have a beer. Landed up staying for a late lunch, and it was superb. strange that they don't offer vegan meals as a 5-star hotel, but we just ask to remove any cheese or buttermilk from the meals chosen. The service is first rate and the hotel itself is accommodating and welcoming. The view is worth it all!"

"We last visited many moons ago, and I'm delighted to say nothing much has changed. This lovely old lady is kept in great nick, and everything is still top class. Excellent food, fluffy bathrobes and quite the friendliest and most customer-oriented staff you will find anywhere. Sadly the one distraction we found this time was the incessant noise of the helicopters flying overhead all day, every day. There is nothing the hotel can do, and that is why I still give it 5 stars, but be aware that the stunning views and proximity to the Falls come at a price."

"This is an elegant colonial-style hotel. Our welcome was warm and welcoming. All members of staff were attentive and very efficient. We were offered a welcome drink while we checked in. The view of the bridge at the falls was superb, and the spray of the Falls, which were in full spate, was fantastic. Our visit to the Falls with our guide was incredible. What an experience. The power of the water, the sound, just standing and watching - nature at its most dramatic, superb! The main reception rooms are as we expected, and we were glad they had not been modernised; they are part of the history. We enjoyed looking at the paintings and the art gallery, as well as walking the hallways and corridors. The pool was well served with comfortable beds, but a lack of umbrellas meant endlessly moving to have a little shade. We ate in the Livingstone Room Restaurant, which was perfect, with excellent attentive service, delicious food and a wonderful pianist. We also ate on the Terrace, which came into its own in the evening, and although the Jungle Restaurant is undergoing refurbishment, lunch in the garden by the pool was perfect. Our Classic Room had been upgraded, but sadly, I wish it hadn't been. It looked like any modern hotel - it had no character. Two of the window panes were obscure glass for some reason. The bedside lamps on the very small side table were so lightweight that they could be knocked over easily. There was no desk/dressing table/chest of drawers to put anything on - there was room for one. No power point by the full-length mirror for hair drying; the bathroom wasn't big enough for that. A mirror over the fridge cupboard would have helped. The shower room had nowhere to put anything except a tiny table. There were no hooks to hang coats. On leaving, while waiting for our driver, we were shown around more of the hotel, which included another Classic Room in the Stable Block. (I wish we had asked to change rooms when we arrived) This was elegant with a large bathroom including a bath, and a beautiful desk, albeit it was a bit further to walk to the restaurant, terrace and pool, but it was by far a much better room. Please do not modernise this room. We really enjoyed our stay, thank you for the simply excellent attentive service and delicious food."
